  1. How do I feel in this place? Y5 Methodist J & I, Wakefield Young Geographers Go Local

  2. What can we discover about a place from an aerial photograph? See additional information in the notes section for each page. http://www.quikmaps.com/full/46681

  3. Use Quikmaps to explore your locality Identify one feature that you can see on the photograph and talk about it with your partner

  4. Feedback to the whole class Choose one spokesperson from your table to come and locate your feature on the IWB. Annotate the display on the interactive whiteboard (IWB)

  5. Using this aerial view of the children’s local area I introduced the idea that maps/aerial photos can be annotated to show a variety of things including information about how we feel in particular places. How do I `feel’ about this place? I feel pleased if I can find my way into school through the estate I really enjoy the views of Wakefield that I can see from the hill in Thornes Park

  6. We talked about how things have changed since this photograph was taken. We added extra detail onto the image using the Interactive Whiteboard tools. Gradually we zoomed in to look closely at the school and grounds This view of the school was obtained from Loc8 a website developed by the Yorkshire & Humberside Grid for Learning

  7. Following this all children were given hands-on access to the software programme Local Studies to create their personal maps of the school. (see PowerPoint 2) They imported an outline map as a background. This gave a framework onto which they could add further information. Creating maps using Local Studies

  8. Later in the Project • Three boys used Quikmaps to explore their own personal geographies linked to place. Whereas Local Studies restricts the map to pre-selected boundaries Quikmaps opens up the world and it soon became apparent that these boys had added hotspots to places in the wider region. Something that would have been totally impossible using Local Studies. • http://www.quikmaps.com/full/47961
