  1. Finding Books: Print and Electronic Health Sciences Library

  2. Objectives Upon completion of this module the participant will understand how to find books at the Loyola HS Library in three different ways: 1. Using Loyola University’s online catalog Pegasus is Loyola’s online catalog and contains the records of materials in all of Loyola’s libraries (Health Sciences, Cudahy, Lewis, Law, Rome). These materials include books, ebooks and print journals. 2. Browsing through ebook titles This is a good option if you are only interested in books online. 3. Using ebook Databases This is a good option if you are unsure of what type of ebook will be helpful to you and would like to do a keyword search through multiple books at once.

  3. Pegasus To get to the catalog from the library’s website, click on the link in the upper right corner or the link on the left side bar.

  4. Quick Search To do a quick search, simply type in your search term and choose what part of the record you would like to search within (e.g. Title, Author, Subject etc.)

  5. Advanced Search To do an advanced search from the home screen, click on the Advanced Search link. If you are on a search results page, you will have to click on the search tab at the top of the screen, and then choose the advanced search tab.

  6. Advanced Search Doing an advanced search allows you to combine search terms using Boolean logic AND narrows the search; both Term A and Term B are included in the results. OR broadens the search; either Term A or Term B are included in the results. Not eliminates a term from the search. Be sure to use the drop down menus to indicate how you would like the system to search for your term(s) and what fields you want to search within.

  7. Tips If you choose to search by the title omit initial articles (a, an, the). If you don’t know the exact title, use the Advanced search method. If you choose to search by author enter the author’s last name followed by first name or initial, if known. (e.g. “White, Betty”) Truncation is handy for broadening keyword searches. Adding a question mark to a term will broaden the results by searching multiple forms of the same word. Examples: educat? will search for education, educator, educate etc. col?r will search for both color and colour

  8. Search Results Search results are displayed in descending order by date but may also be sorted by Author or Title.

  9. Search Results When going through your results, note that each item has a call number and a library location. If the book you’re interested in is located at another Loyola library, you can fill out an interlibrary loan form to request that the book be sent to the Health Sciences Library in Maywood.

  10. Search Results Note that you can filter your results to a library and format.

  11. Search Results Click on the title of a book to see more information like the book chapters and subjects covered. Also note that the full record has additional actions, like text messaging your phone the call number, getting further information about the book through Google Books, or requesting that the book be sent to our library if it is at a different Loyola library.

  12. Ebooks If the book is electronic you will need to click on the link given in the full record and login through the proxy server if you are off-campus.

  13. Ebooks The Health Sciences Library’s off campus login looks like this. If you have not yet requested a login username and password, fill out the form from the library’s website. If you have lost your username or password contact Donald Nagolski at dnagols@lumc.edu.

  14. User Account You can look at your checked-out, requested or overdue items by signing into your own Pegasus account. First click on My Library Account. Then enter the barcode number from your Loyola ID and your last name and hit Log in.

  15. Ebooks on the Library Website If you are sure you are only interested in using the library’s ebooks you may want to browse through the ebooks on the library’s website. To get to the webpage on books place your cursor over the E-resources tab and click on Books & Ebooks.

  16. Ebooks on the Library Website From here you can choose to browse through the ebooks by title or subject.

  17. Ebooks on the Library Website If you are unsure of the type of ebook that you need, you might want to use one of the ebook databases to search through multiple books at once. These are listed on the same book page.

  18. Ebooks on the Library Website For example, clicking on the Books@Ovid option and typing in “atrial fibrillation” will result in a list of books with the phrase located in the text:
