  4. Conscious Choking VictimPartial Blockage • The victim will be coughing and getting some air into their lungs • Area check (move anything the victim could fall on out of the way) • Call for extra help • Encourage them to keep coughing

  5. Conscious Choking VictimComplete Blockage • The victim will be wheezing or making no sound at all. No air is getting into their lungs • The victim may have a flushed or bluish face • Area check (move anything the victim could fall on out of the way) • Ask if you can help (if the answer is no, stand back)

  6. Call for extra help • Stand behind victim • Place one of your feet between theirs • Move your head to the side • Landmark just under their ribs • Place a fist there (just above belly button), and cup with your other hand • Thrust up and in in one motion (45 degree angle). Continue this motion

  7. Unconscious Choking Victim • 1. Area Check • 2. LOCs • 3. 911 • 4. A - Airway • 5. B - Breathing (10 second check)

  8. 6. Initiate CPR by giving 2 breaths • You will notice that the first breath doesn’t go in (puffed out cheeks) • Open the airway further and give another breath • Move to 30 compressions • Before giving 2 more breaths, do a visual check to see if the compressions have unblocked the airway (look for a small piece of food, gum etc.) • Give one breath, if it doesn’t go in, open the airway further before giving the second • Repeat!
