  1. Christian Stewardship Matthew 25:14-30 The Church at Mesquite

  2. Scriptural Text – Matthew 25:14-30 • 14"Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. 15To one he gave five talentsof money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more. 17So also, the one with the two talents gained two more. 18But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money. 19"After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. 20The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.' 21"His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!' 22"The man with the two talents also came. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.' 23"His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!' 24"Then the man who had received the one talent came. 'Master,' he said, 'I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.' 26"His master replied, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest. 28" 'Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents. 29For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. 30And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'  The Church at Mesquite

  3. Scriptural Background • After lamenting over the state of Jerusalem after His return, Jesus leaves the temple and goes to the Mount of Olives. (Matt. 23:37-24:3) • His disciples come to Him privately asking that He explain to them the things He is saying about things that will soon come to pass. (Matt. 24:3) • Jesus begins explaining things that are shortly to come beginning with verse 4, and in Chapter 25 he describes 2 parables to them concerning the kingdom of heaven (the church). • The first is about wise and foolish virgins and about being prepared for the Lord’s return. The second is about stewardship. The Church at Mesquite

  4. Christian Stewardship • Definition: • 1: the office, duties, and obligations of a steward2: the conducting, supervising, or managing of something ; especially : the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care The Church at Mesquite

  5. What is stewardship? • Stewardship is the managing of something one doesn’t own • It implies • 1. that we’re responsible for what we’re managing, and • 2. that we have decisions to make with regard to who we’re managing for. The Church at Mesquite

  6. What Are We Stewards Over? • Everything is created by God • 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1) • 26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, F2and over all the creatures that move along the ground." 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.  (Genesis 1:26-27) The Church at Mesquite

  7. What Are We Stewards Over? • Everything belongs to God • 7"Hear, O My people, and I will speak, O Israel, and I will testify against you; I am God, your God! 8I will not rebuke you for your sacrificesor your burnt offerings, which are continually before Me. 9I will not take a bull from your house, nor goats out of your folds. 10For every beast of the forest is Mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. 11I know all the birds of the mountains, and the wild beasts of the field are Mine. 12"If I were hungry, I would not tell you; for the world is Mine, and all its fullness. (Psalms 50:7-12) The Church at Mesquite

  8. What Are We Stewards Over? • Everything we have came from someone else • And he said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, And naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD." (Job 1:21) The Church at Mesquite

  9. What Are We Stewards Over? • As such, everything that we’ve been given by God, we are stewards over • Our time is a gift from God • Our talents are a gift from God • Our treasure (money) is a gift from God The Church at Mesquite

  10. The Parable of the Talents • What Happened? • The master leaves his money in the hands of 3 of his servants and goes on a journey. • He gives one 5 talents of money, one 3 talents of money, and one 1 talent of money. (1 talent = 2,223,720 in gold as of Friday: $11,118,600; $6,671,160; $2,223,720) • Knowing who they work for, the servants with 5 & 3 talents immediately go to work and double the master’s money, knowing it will please him when he returns. • The third is afraid of losing the master’s money, so he buries his talent in the ground. • When the master returns, the servants who doubled his money are rewarded, while the one who buried it was punished. 11. The Parable of the Talents • What are the lessons about stewardship that Jesus wants us to learn from this parable about the kingdom? The Church at Mesquite

  12. The Parable of the Talents • 1. God has entrusted us with His property • 14"Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. 15To one he gave five talentsof money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. (v. 14-16) The Church at Mesquite

  13. The Parable of the Talents • 2. God expects us to multiply what He has given us through effort, risk and action. • 19"After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. Come and share your master's happiness!‘ (v. 19-23) The Church at Mesquite

  14. The Parable of the Talents • 3. God is not pleased with those who misuse their talents because of fear, laziness or excuses. • 24"Then the man who had received the one talent came. (v. 24-27) The Church at Mesquite

  15. The Parable of the Talents • 4. Those who don’t manage God’s possessions the way He expects will be punished. • 28" 'Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents. 29For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. 30And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.‘ (v. 28-30) The Church at Mesquite

  16. Christian Stewardship - Conclusion • Consider the warning of the Lord given through the prophet Haggai (Haggai 1:2-9) • God doesn’t ask us to be good stewards of what He gives us: He EXPECTS us to be good stewards. • We have a responsibility to use what He gives us to build up His house FIRST. • If we refuse, make excuses, put ourselves first or do nothing with what He gives us, rest assured He will not be pleased, and we will be punished accordingly.
