  3. immigration • An immigrant is someone who comes from another nation to live in the United States • ALL Americans can trace their heritage to immigrants except for Native Americans

  4. immigration • The first immigrants who entered the United States were from England and Africa.

  5. immigration 4. Reasons they wanted to come to the United States: • Food and a better way of life—in Ireland a potato famine had wiped out much of the population. Most of the immigrants from Ireland settled in the northeast region of the U.S. • Religious freedom • Plenty of land • Fortune • Better jobs and wages—the Chinese who helped build the railroads settled in the west in states such as California

  6. immigration • Between 1870 and 1910 the heaviest immigration occurred. • Immigrants were Poles, Jews, Germans, Slavs, and Chinese. • Most immigrants entered through New York City—being greeted by the Statue of Liberty, and being processed through Ellis Island (front door of America!!) • As many as 5000 were processed each day!!

  7. immigration • Major problems the immigrants faced: a) Tenement buildings were dirty and overcrowded, which led to disease and death. b) Low paying jobs in sweatshops—this led to poverty c) Working conditions were dangerous and workers had no representation d) Many different languages and religions

  8. immigration • Henry Cabot Lodge a) Said immigrants were bringing down the English race!! b) He asked for only those who could read and write to be allowed to enter the United States • Early in the 1900’s, Congress passed a series of laws limiting the number of immigrants entering the US, placing quotas on the types of immigrants entering
