This study investigates the evolutionary dynamics of NalR mutants in varying antibiotic conditions. We explore how selection pressures from antibiotics influence the survival and fitness of these mutants. Key questions include whether NalR mutants exhibit lower fitness in antibiotic-free environments and the trade-offs involved. We evaluate the correlation between selective pressures and mutant prevalence, analyze nucleotide sequences of candidate genes for mutations, and assess fitness recovery over generations after removing selection. Suggestions include maintaining selective pressure until peak performance in competitive environments.

Selection for fit types in a variable population • Selection pressure: antibiotic • Mutants survive • AreNalRmutantsless fit in anantibiotic-free environment? Tradeoff?
Select forNalRmutants (differentNal-Conc)correlation between selective pressure and number of mutants? • Nucleotide sequence of candidate genes Mutations? • Recovery of fitness during many generations when selection removed? Duration?
Suggestions: Maintain selective pressure for NalR Mutant up to “cage fight” ? Plate replicates and/or various timepoints
