  1. Bold Girls Rona Munro

  2. We are learning to: • Identify elements of characterisation with regards to Cassie.

  3. Scene 2: In the club • Scene starts with a minute’s silence for the young man killed in the shooting of scene 1. • The women sit and chat and Marie wins the opportunity to play “The Price is Right”. • Marie and Nora have an argument about Cassie’s behaviour and dress which occurs while they are trying to give Marie the prices of the items that come up. • Deirdre is the waitress at the club and tells Cassie that she saw her in a car “with him”. • Cassie goes into a blind rage and tries to get Deirdre. Marie takes her outside to get a taxi.

  4. Characterisation • Who can remind me of the elements of characterisation?

  5. Appearance • Personality • Actions • Dialogue • Characters thoughts and feelings • Other character’s opinion of said character

  6. Cassie – Individual Task (10 minutes) • Scene 2 is largely Cassie’s scene. • On your own, make a list of what we learn about: • Cassie’s behaviour and characterisation? • Cassie’s upbringing?

  7. Feedback • Cassie’s behaviour/characterisation • Cassie desires escape – saves money to run away with. • Determined to escape that she even considers abandoning her children – selfish? • Unhappy in her marriage: • “NORA – …we’ve a lot to weigh us down … one man dead and the other in a prison cell. - CASSIE – And here’s me never stopped dancing since they took mine away.”

  8. Cassie’s behaviour/characterisation continued • Behaves promiscuously – has a bit of a reputation for cheating on her husband. • Seems to enjoy attention. In scene 2 when she’s up dancing: • “Marie glances round nervously. - CASSIE – What, are they looking? … Let them.”

  9. Cassie’s behaviour/characterisation continued • Doesn’t get on well with her mum (Nora). Her mother disapproves of her behaviour. Often argue e.g. in the club in scene 2: • “NORA – I noticed that dress! • CASSIE – Good. • NORA – There’s nothing good about it.” • Feels her mum favoured her brother Martin over her. “Do you know you never put a plate of food in front of me before he had his.”

  10. Feedback • Cassie’s upbringing • Cassie’s soliloquy (when she speaks to herself with no other characters) reveals her feelings on the way she was raised: • “Spoil the wee girls with housework and reproaches … They’re bold and bad and broken at fourteen but you love them as you love yourself… That’s why you hurt them so much. (Pause)Ruin the boys … tell them they’ll always be your own bold wee man … and you love them best of all – that’s why they hurt you so much.”

  11. Theme: Escapism • An important theme of this play is the idea of escapism. • What do you think I mean by this?

  12. Escapism • It is quite clear that most of the women in this play wish to escape their lives – they are unhappy with how their life has mapped out and they wish to leave it behind.

  13. Cassie and Escapism • Why would Cassie wish to escape her life? • As a group, discuss the contributing factors that may wish her to flee from her normal life. • 5.5 minutes

  14. Feedback

  15. Cassie and Escapism • Marriage Cassie is clearly unhappy in her marriage. News of her husband’s release provokes feelings of fear rather than excitement. CASSIE – I don’t want him in the house in my bed, Marie.

  16. Cassie and Escapism • Infidelity It is quite clear that Cassie has already made attempts to escape her life through adulterous relationships. Cassie: Oh, I’m just bad Marie, didn’t you know? Deirdre: I saw you before…With a man. With him. With------

  17. Cassie and Escapism • Her mother • Cassie feels great resentment towards her mother as she feels she was more supportive towards her brother Martin (in prison) than she was towards her. • Cassie: “Do you know you never put a plate of food in front of me before he had his.”
