  5. After the War • The Civil War ended in 1865 with the North (USA) winning • The war left the South devastated • The focus of the U.S. now became how to re-admit the southern states into the Union. • This became known as the “Era of Reconstruction”.

  6. 3 Parts of Reconstruction • Reconstruction require the S. to do 3 things: • Political change: S. had to write new state constitutions that rejected secession and made slavery illegal • Economic change: S. had to find new ways to make $$$$ w/out slaves • Social change: S. had to develop the political and social status of former slaves • It would take 11 years for all of the southern states to eventually agree to these terms.
