  4. Opening sentence M: Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, C: the conviction of things not seen. (Heb 11:1 NRSV)

  5. PREPARATION M: In the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit. C: ♫ Amen

  6. Opening Hymn 1. Awake, my soul, and with the sun Thy daily stage of duty run; Shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise To pay thy morning sacrifice.

  7. Opening Hymn 2. Redeem thy mis-spent moments past, And live this day as if thy last; Improve thy talent with due care; For the great day thyself prepare.

  8. Opening Hymn 3. Let all thy converse be sincere, Thy conscience as the noon-day clear; Think how all-seeing God thy ways And all thy secret thoughts surveys.

  11. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Friends in Christ: Let us draw near to God our Father with a true heart to confess our sins, and ask him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

  12. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Our help is in the name of the Lord. C: ♫ He mádeheavên and earth. M: I said, I will confess my sins to the Lord. C: ♫ Then hé forgave the guilt of my sin.

  13. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: Almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor helpless sinner, confess to you all my sins, and repent of all the evil I have done. I have deeply displeased you and deserve your punishment in time and in eternity.

  14. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION But I am sorry for my sins, and I ask you, for the sake of the holy innocent sufferings and death of your dear Son Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me. Amen.

  15. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: I ask each of you in the presence of God who searches the heart: Do you confess that you have sinned, and do you repent of your sins? C: I do.

  16. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Do you believe that Jesus Christ has redeemed you from all your sins, and do you desire forgiveness in his name? C: I do.

  17. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Do you intend with the help of the Holy Spirit to live as in God's presence, and to strive daily to lead a holy life, even as Christ has made you holy? C: I do.

  18. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Upon your confession, I, as a called and ordained servant of the word, announce the grace of God to all of you, and on behalf of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit. Peace be with you. C: Amen.

  25. GREETING M: The Lord be with you C: ♫ And also with you.

  26. PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray that we live by faith. C: God, our protector and guide, as we travel on through life, teach us to trust in your loving direction, knowing that you will bring us safely home to you.

  27. PRAYER OF THE DAY We ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

  28. FIRST READING R: The first Reading for the twelfth Sunday after Pentecost is written in Chapter one of Isaiah beginning at verse one. Isaiah 1:1,10-20 CEV God tells his people: Become clean

  29. Isaiah 1:1,10-20 I am Isaiah, the son of Amoz. And this is the message that I was given about Judah and Jerusalem when Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah were the kings of Judah:

  30. Isaiah 1:1,10-20 10You are no better than the leaders and people of Sodom and Gomorrah! So listen to the LORD God: 11"Your sacrifices mean nothing to me. I am sick of your offerings of rams and choice cattle; I don't like the blood of bulls or lambs or goats.

  31. Isaiah 1:1,10-20 12"Who asked you to bring all this when you come to worship me? Stay out of my temple! 13Your sacrifices are worthless, and incense is disgusting.

  32. Isaiah 1:1,10-20 I can't stand the evil you do on your New Moon Festivals or on your Sabbaths and other times of worship. 14I hate your New Moon Festivals and all others as well. They are a heavy burden I am tired of carrying.

  33. Isaiah 1:1,10-20 15"No matter how much you pray, I won't listen. You are too violent. 16Wash yourselves clean! I am disgusted with your filthy deeds. Stop doing wrong 17and learn to live right. See that justice is done. Defend widows and orphans and help those in need.”

  34. Isaiah 1:1,10-20 18I, the LORD, invite you to come and talk it over. Your sins are scarlet red, but they will be whiter than snow or wool. 19If you willingly obey me, the best crops in the land will be yours. 20But if you turn against me, your enemies will kill you. I, the LORD, have spoken. This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

  35. Psalm 50:1-8,22,23CEV R: The Psalm is Psalm 50 1From east to west, the powerful LORD God has been calling together everyone on earth. C: 2God shines brightly from Zion, the most beautiful city.

  36. Psalm 50:1-8,22,23CEV R: 3Our God approaches, but not silently; a flaming fire comes first, and a storm surrounds him. C: 4God comes to judge his people. He shouts to the heavens and to the earth, R: 5"Call my followers together! They offered me a sacrifice, and we made an agreement.”

  37. Psalm 50:1-8,22,23CEV C: 6The heavens announce, "God is the judge, and he is always honest." R: 7My people, I am God! Israel, I am your God. Listen to my charges against you.

  38. Psalm 50:1-8,22,23CEV C: 8Although you offer sacrifices and always bring gifts, 22You have ignored me! So pay close attention or I will tear you apart, and no one can help you.

  39. Psalm 50:1-8,22,23CEV R: 23The sacrifice that honours me is a thankful heart. Obey me, and I, your God, will show my power to save. C: Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit As it was in the beginning is now and will be for ever Amen.

  40. SECOND READING R: The second reading is written in Chapter eleven of Hebrews beginning at verse one. Hebrews 11:1-3,8-16 CEV Living by faith in God's promise

Hebrews 11:1-3,8-16 Faith makes us sure of what we hope for and gives us proof of what we cannot see. 2It was their faith that made our ancestors pleasing to God. 3Because of our faith, we know that the world was made at God's command. We also know that what can be seen was made out of what cannot be seen.

  42. Hebrews 11:1-3,8-16 8Abraham had faith and obeyed God. He was told to go to the land that God had said would be his, and he left for a country he had never seen. 9Because Abraham had faith, he lived as a stranger in the promised land. He lived there in a tent, and so did Isaac and Jacob, who were later given the same promise.

  43. Hebrews 11:1-3,8-16 10Abraham did this, because he was waiting for the eternal city that God had planned and built.

  44. Hebrews 11:1-3,8-16 11Even when Sarah was too old to have children, she had faith that God would do what he had promised, and she had a son. 12Her husband Abraham was almost dead, but he became the ancestor of many people. In fact, there are as many of them as there are stars in the sky or grains of sand along the beach.

  45. Hebrews 11:1-3,8-16 13Every one of those people died. But they still had faith, even though they had not received what they had been promised. They were glad just to see these things from far away, and they agreed that they were only strangers and foreigners on this earth.

  46. Hebrews 11:1-3,8-16 14When people talk this way, it is clear that they are looking for a place to call their own. 15If they had been talking about the land where they had once lived, they could have gone back at any time.
