  3. Opening sentence M: Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, C: coming down from the Father of lights. (Jas 1:17) NRSV

  4. PREPARATION M: In the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen

  5. Opening Hymn We sing our opening hymn: Jesus came - the heavens adoring LH 15 CAL 293 Godfrey Thring 1823-1903, alt

  6. Jesus came - the heavens adoring  1. Jesus came- the heavens adoring - came with peace from realms on high; Jesus came for our redemption, humbly came on earth to die: alleluia, alleluia! came in deep humility.

  7. Jesus came - the heavens adoring  2. Jesus comes again in mercy, when our hearts are bowed with care; Jesus comes again in answer to an earnest, heartfelt prayer; alleluia, alleluia! comes to save us from despair.

  11. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Friends in Christ: Let us draw near to God our Father with a true heart to confess our sins, and ask him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

  12. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Our help is in the name of the Lord. C: ♫ He mádeheavên and earth. M: I said, I will confess my sins to the Lord. C: ♫ Then hé forgave the guilt of my sin.

  13. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: Almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor helpless sinner, confess to you all my sins, and repent of all the evil I have done. I have deeply displeased you and deserve your punishment in time and in eternity.

  14. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION But I am sorry for my sins, and I ask you, for the sake of the holy innocent sufferings and death of your dear Son Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me. Amen.

  15. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: I ask each of you in the presence of God who searches the heart: Do you confess that you have sinned, and do you repent of your sins? I do.

  16. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Do you believe that Jesus Christ has redeemed you from all your sins, and do you desire forgiveness in his name? C:I do.

  17. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Do you intend with the help of the Holy Spirit to live as in God's presence, and to strive daily to lead a holy life, even as Christ has made you holy? C: I do.

  18. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Christ gave to his church the authority to forgive the sins of those who repent, and to declare to those who do not repent that their sins are not forgiven.

  19. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Therefore, upon your confession, I, as a called and ordained servant of the word, announce the grace of God to all of you, and on behalf of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit. Peace be with you. Amen.

  26. PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray for sincerity. C: Holy and faithful God, keep us from a piety that is only for show. Wash us completely clean, so that what flows out of us may be pure and good.

  27. PRAYER OF THE DAY We ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

  28. FIRST READING Song of Solomon 2:8-13 CEV Springtime love song R: The first Reading for the 14th Sunday after Pentecost is written in Chapter2 of Song of Solomon, beginning at Verse 8.

  36. SECOND READING James 1:17-27 CEV Listening and doing R: The Second Reading is written in Chapter 1 of James, beginning at Verse 17.

  37. James 1:17-27 17Every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father who created all the lights in the heavens. He is always the same and never makes dark shadows by changing.

  38. James 1:17-27 18He wanted us to be his own special people, and so he sent the true message to give us new birth.  19My dear friends, you should be quick to listen and slow to speak or to get angry. 20If you are angry, you cannot do any of the good things that God wants done.

  39. James 1:17-27 21You must stop doing anything immoral or evil. Instead be humble and accept the message that is planted in you to save you. 

  40. James 1:17-27 22Obey God's message! Don't fool yourselves by just listening to it. 23If you hear the message and don't obey it, you are like people who stare at themselves in a mirror 24and forget what they look like as soon as they leave.

  41. James 1:17-27 25But you must never stop looking at the perfect law that sets you free. God will bless you in everything you do, if you listen and obey, and don't just hear and forget.  26If you think you are being religious, but can't control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and everything you do is useless.

  42. James 1:17-27 27Religion that pleases God the Father must be pure and spotless. You must help needy orphans and widows and not let this world make you evil.  This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

  44. gospel Mark 7:1-8,14,15,21-23 CEV What makes people unclean M: The Holy Gospel is written in Chapter seven of the Gospel according to St Mark beginning at Verse one. C: ♫ Glory to you, O Lord.

  45. Mark 7:1-8,14,15,21-23 M: Some Pharisees and several teachers of the Law of Moses from Jerusalem came and gathered around Jesus. 2They noticed that some of his disciples ate without first washing their hands.

  46. Mark 7:1-8,14,15,21-23 The Pharisees and many others obey the teachings of their ancestors. They always wash their hands in the proper way before eating. 4None of them will eat anything they buy in the market until it is washed. They also follow a lot of other teachings, such as washing cups, pitchers, and bowls.
