draft-wang-simple-presence-ril-00 Report

This study presents solutions to challenges faced by watchers when subscribing to presence information using PIDF and RPID. Notifiers often cannot provide all requested attributes due to various limitations, leaving watchers uncertain about the status of their requests. We propose sending a message containing Allowed, Forbidden, and Unsupported attributes after subscriber authorization, enabling watchers to make informed decisions about their subscriptions rather than waiting indefinitely. This approach aims to improve the transparency and efficiency of presence information distribution.

  2. Motivation • In using of PIDF or RPID, a watcher may try to subscribe a series of information. But because the following reasons, the notifier can not support or give all the information the watcher requested: • The watched resource have no all the attributes that the watcher requested. • PA/PUA does not support all the attributes that the watcher requested. • PA/PUA can only publish part of the requested attributes to the watcher because of local policy or because he have no rights to the others. • Currently, PA will only NOTIFY the recognized, accepted and allowed attributes back to the watcher. On the viewpoint of the watcher, it will have no way to know it should wait for a little more time or it will never come. This is a problem to be resolved.

  3. Some Terminology • ASPE: Allowed Subscribe Presence Element • FSPE: Forbidden Subscribe Presence Element • FASPE: Final Allowed Subscribe Presence Element • USRIL: Unsupported Resource Information List • RIL: Resource Information List. It includes ASPE, FSPE and USRIL.

  4. Some new idea • After authorizes the subscriber, notifier can send back all or part of the ASPE, FSPE and USRIL in a message to the subscriber. • After gets this information, the subscriber will know which information it will or will never get. If it will not get some key information any more, the subscriber can decide to give up or find some other way but not just waiting.
