Stop Motion Film Making A Critical Analysis of Presented By: Michael Toner / Art 683
Evolving Stop-Motion Styles • Animation (clay / paper / models / drawings) • Go-Motion – sequentially timed movement synchronized with video frame • Stop motion astronomy • Computer generated imagery • Stereoscopic – more three dimensional • Reality based Time-lapse Photography • Tilt-shift
Tilt Shift/Stop Motion/ Timelapse • Takes advantage of Scheimpflug Principle • Allows for the focal plain and lens angle to be manipulated • Creates a miniaturized effect • Captured at slower rates (typically 1 frm/sec) • Payback at normal film speeds (typically 30frms/sec) • Creates a unique stop-motion style • Being used now in commercial film
Artist- Keith Loutit • Sydney photographer and filmmaker • Internet and media sensation following the release of his 'Bathtub' series of short films • Known as one of the pioneers of the tilt-shift / time-lapse technique • Loutit's aim is create a sense of wonder by "challenging people's perceptions of scale, and helping the viewer to distance themselves from places they know well". • http://player.vimeo.com/video/3156959?color=ffffff http://keithloutit.com/
Critical Interpretations • Symbolic • Provides viewer to have new perspective • Time & space used could have perceived meaning • Pragmatic • Powerful messages about human behavior • Increases understanding about nature • Training exercise intended to educate or build awareness • Postmodernism seems to be most appropriate form or theory of analysis
Post-Modernist Interpretation • Tilt-shift gives new perspective on reality • Breaks down social constructs and assumptions • Intentional departure from the traditional or accepted • Innovative style that forces reconsideration of ordinary • Raises interesting questions about what is truth or reality • Time and focal plane are manipulated as a medium of art • Use of music allows for transcendental experience
Summary of Form Analysis • Stop-motion and timelapse techniques continue to develop at increasing rates with technology • Ideal medium for teaching visual culture • Innovative and exciting quality of new works • Thought provoking style that stimulates visually • Provides a different view of our world • Energetic work that help advance techniques in Tilt-Shift Photography • Changed my view of the mundane • I love this artists work…
