Standing Waves • Textbook definition-a standing wave is a wave pattern that results when two waves of the same frequency, wavelength, and amplitude travel in opposite directions and interfere • Layman’s terms-two identical waves travel through each other and create what appears like a wave that’s standing still

  3. Nodes and antinodes • Textbook definitions-a node is a point in a standing wave that maintains zero displacement • Antinode-a point in a standing wave, halfway between two nodes, at which the largest displacement occurs

  4. Standing Wave Generator • To make a standing wave, ask Mrs. Grayot to show you where the standing wave generator is. • It’s really easy to make a standing wave. Adjust the prongs, turn it to on, and play with the motor speed switch.

  5. Remember a node is a point with zero displacement. The nodes will be the narrowest point in the standing wave. • The antinodes will be where the waves are biggest or thickest
