  1. ADDENDUM TO HUMAN GEOGRAPHY PPTjust a few things I thought about to help fill in holes in Ch. 1 PPT...was afraid if they were part of main PPT, I would put everyone to sleep :)

  2. Definition Geography The spatial perspective: how human activities are organized in space & how they relate to the natural environment.

  3. Origins of Geography • Greek Term Geo meaning “EARTH” + Graphy meaning “To Write” Eratosthenes 194 BC

  4. CLAUDIUS PTOLEMY circa 150 a.d.

  5. TWO TYPES OF GEOGRAPHY • PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY- Where & Why NATURAL FORCES (vegetation, landforms, climates) occur as they do? • HUMAN GEOGRAPHYWhere? & Why?HUMAN ACTIVITIES (religions, cities, businesses) are located where they are.

  6. Example: Hurricane Katrina • Physical geographers - focus on how hurricanes form, storm surges, etc. • Human Geographers- focus on the levees that failed, effects on the population, and the economic implications.

  7. Human Geography • The study of how people make places • AND organize space & society • AND interact with each other in places & across space • AND make sense of others in our locality, region, and world.

  8. Geography As It Relates To Other Disciplines • SCIENTISTS • Concerned with process - focus on causes & effects that occur regardless of time & place. The key questions often begin “how?" • HISTORIANS • Concerned with time - focus on time of events & what happens before & after them. The key questions often begin “when?” • GEOGRAPHERS • Concerned with space - focus on locations of things, conditions in a particular place & connections among places. The key questions often begin with “where?”
