  5. 3 gal = qt Convert Units of Capacity Refer to the information in the Key Concept: Customary Units of Capacity. Three gallons of juice were served at a class picnic. How many quarts of juice is 3 gallons? Larger units (gallons) are being converted to smaller units (quarts). Since 1 gallon (gal) = 4 quarts (qt), multiply 3 by 4. Answer: So, 3 gallons of juice is equal to 3 × 4 or 12 quarts. Example 1

  6. A B C D Five gallons of different beverages were served at a birthday party. How many quarts is this? • 12 quarts • 20 quarts • 25 quarts • 30 quarts Example 1

  7. Convert Units of Capacity Mrs. Diego needs 5 pints plus 1 cup of blueberries to make muffins. How many cups of blueberries does she need? First, convert 5 pints 1 cup to cups. Since 1 pint = 2 cups, multiply 5 by 2. 5 × 2 = 10 Then add the remaining 1 cup. Answer: So, Mrs. Diego needs 10 + 1 or 11 cups of blueberries. Example 2

  8. A B C D LaKeesha needs 4 pints plus 1 cup of milk for her recipe. How many cups of milk does she need? • 7 cups • 8 cups • 9 cups • 10 cups Example 2

  9. 15 qt = gal 3 15 ÷ 4 = 3 R3, or 3 4 Answer: So, there are 3 gallons 3 quarts or 3 gallons in 15 quarts. 3 4 Parts of Units How many gallons are in 15 quarts? To convert a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide. Since 4 quarts = 1 gallon, divide 15 by 4. Example 3

  10. A B C D 1 B. 7 quarts 2 1 D. 8 quarts 2 How many quarts are in 17 pints? A. 7 quarts C. 8 quarts Example 3
