Meet the Champions Dawn Lafferty 3rd Flight
Dawn Lafferty3rd Flight • When did you begin golfing? • 10 years ago, I was working in a hotel sales office (Hyatt in Dallas) and every Friday the guys would leave the office around 11 a.m. to take their clients out golfing, while I was stuck manning the phones and handling their inquiries. Somehow, taking my female clients to the spa didn’t have the same effect. So I decided to take up the game and took some lessons while living in Dallas. • Current or Former Profession • Director of Incentive Sales - Champions Gate Golf Club—just a fancy title for booking group golf tournaments and events.
Dawn Lafferty3rd Flight • In what other hobbies/interests are you involved ? • What else is there besides golf? Oh—wine—I love wine tastings.
Dawn Lafferty3rd Flight • What is your favorite course to play? • My home course, of course. The International Course at ChampionsGate. It’s always a good challenge and you can’t beat the employee benefits! • What is your favorite club in your bag? • My 26 degree PING hybrid. It gets me out of trouble when needed.
Dawn Lafferty3rd Flight • Have you advanced to either Semi or Final Championship level previously? If so, tell us about your experience. • Yes. This is my third time. My first was three years ago. I played on a scramble team with Lisa Kaplan, Beth Robeson and Patty Martin. We had a great bonding experience—all the traveling, shopping, we had to buy matching outfits for all our practice round days and pre-event stuff, too. I have to say the first year was the most challenging to get past the nerves. When they officially announce you on the tee, you realize this is a whole different competition. We didn’t take home the gold that year, but the everlasting rapport and friendships that were created on that journey are everlasting. I was also fortunate to advance to Nationals last year. It’s pretty humbling when you realize you’re part of 200 women golfers representing their chapters. The bonding, sisterhood and friendships I have made along the way have been the best part of it all.
Dawn Lafferty3rd Flight • What good luck charm or special routine will you use at the Semi-final/Final rounds? • Just sticking with my standard pre-shot routine on every hole—and leaving the bad ones behind me. • How did you become involved with the EWGA? • I bid on a Chapter Championship when I was working at Eagle Creek Golf Club, when Lisa Kaplan was running it. I had heard about EWGA and wanted to get involved. Lisa recruited me to help her with events that year and we have been great friends ever since.
Dawn Lafferty3rd Flight • What might others be interested/surprised to know about you. • The first year my scramble team advanced in the Championship, I choked horribly and couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn. We were down to hole #18 and HAD to use my drive on that hole. My ball landed under a little palm bush and caused the team to take a drop. On my attempt, I hit a tree and the ball came back about 50 yards—yes, negative yardage! We were all stressed and I was so upset that I had let the team down. Well, on my next shot, my teammates ran and hid behind the cart. I belly laughed so hard, I almost peed my pants! It really cut the tension.
