What is Tooth decay? • Tooth decay is a diseases that is highly preventable but it effects a lot of people during some degree of there life time. • Our teeth have natural bacteria in them and when we eat and have little scraps between there teeth which produce acid. • These acids damage your teeth over time by dissolving the enamel which weakens the teeth and leads to tooth decay. • Foods containing carbohydrates (starches and sugars), such as soda pop, candy, ice cream, milk, and cake, and even some fruits, vegetables, and juices, may contribute to tooth decay.

What is an alkali? • A base is a compound that can neutralize an acid. • An alkali is a soluble base which is very corrosive. • Examples of Alkali’s • Sodium hydroxide = NaOH • Calcium carbonate = CaCO3 • Ammonia solution = NH4OH • Magnesium Oxide = MgO • Bases are usually, Metal Oxides, Hydroxides or Carbonates.

Methods to prevent tooth Decay • Brush your teeth to get rid of any food between the teeth • Have a balanced diet because lack of vitamins and minerals can cause gum diseases which can lead to tooth decay. • Avoid eating high sugar and high acid foods. (cookies candies and soda) • Drink water after eating to neutralize the PH level.
