  13. Purpose Clauses & the Sequence of Tenses • Purpose: why are you doing something? For what purpose did the action occur? • In English: • I am fighting to conquer the enemy. (infinitive) • You are giving me this textbook in order that I may understand Latin. (in order that...may [MV: present tense]/might [MV: past tense]) • He studied hard so that he might pass the exam. (so that...may/might) • In Latin: • subordinating conjunction ut or nē+ subjunctive • ut = in order that (so that; to _) • nē = in order that...not (so that...not; not to _; archaic: “lest”)
