  1. Maths!

  2. Number • Recognising numbers • Writing numbers • Ordering numbers – including non consecutive

  3. Number • Counting • Forwards and backwards in ones to 10. • Starting at 0 then from any number • Crossing the 10s boundary – to and from 13. • Then to 20 etc. • Be able to say a number that is one more or one less than a number. • Children find counting back most difficult.

  4. Progression in Calculation • Giving children a context to work in is crucial at all stages so they have a clear understanding of what addition and subtraction actually means. • For example – I have 3 green apples and 2 red apples. How many apples have I got altogether? • We vary the context of these problems to include measure and money as well. • Addition can be done in any order - larger number first.

  5. Progression in Calculation • Practical addition and subtraction (covered in Year R and beginning of Year 1 until the children are confident to move on). • Using apparatus or things from the classroom e.g. pencils etc.

  6. Progression in Calculation • Pictorial representations – addition 3+2 = 3 2 5

  7. Progression in Calculation • Pictorial representations – subtraction 5 – 2 = 3

  8. Progression in Calculation • Using representative drawing - addition 3 + 2 = 3 2 5

  9. Progression in Calculation • Using representative drawing - addition 5 – 2 = 3

  10. Progression in Calculation • Using symbols – addition 3 + 2 = and makes 5 2 3 + =

  11. Progression in Calculation • Using symbols – subtraction 5 - 2 = 3 5 2 - =

  12. Progression in Calculation • Put the largest number in your head and count on using dots – addition 3 + 2 = 3 + = 5

  13. Progression in Calculation • Put the largest number in your head and count back using dots – subtraction 5 - 2 = 5 - = 3

  14. Helping at Home • Practise reading, writing and ordering numbers. • Practise counting forwards and backwards – particularly backwards • Look for numbers in the environment • Count the knives and forks – how many are there altogether. What if I took 3 away?
