  4. Advisory Planning 2010 • August – Elliot Washor, Big Picture Learning • September – Staff & Student Work Group • October – Staff Consensus • November – Staff & Student Work Group, Parent Input • January – Present to students in English classes

Advisory Logistics • Single grade level • Class size 20-25 • Same teacher for 4 years • 40 minutes Mon.-Thurs. • 2 days/wk Advisory Content • 2 days/wk study hall, office hours, computer lab, assemblies, class meetings etc. • Length of Day: Red 3:40, White 2:05 • Required attendance and credit bearing

  6. Purpose of Advisory To provide systematic academic advising and college/post high school counseling. To provide social and emotional support for each student. To improve student achievement. To develop a meaningful Personal Education Plan (PEP) for each student.

Strengths and Interests • Graduation Requirements/college admission • Clubs, AHS Website • Social issues – What’s Homecoming? • Plan for summer • 4 year Plan for classes

Sophomores: Keep Going • Explore Career Information Systems (CIS) • Resources in community • Write a resumé • Learn to drive well • Money management • PSAT Prep and Interpretation of results • What to do if things go “bad”? • Review Common Application • Foreign Exchange • Summer plan • Mini Senior Project/Demonstration of Learning

  11. Juniors: Making a Plan • Research post HS options/College matching • Internships • Summer plans and back up for students • Alumni Panel (Sept and Dec) • Stress Reduction Important • Note: Starting spring 2011 Juniors will serve on panels for senior projects

  12. Seniors: Next Steps • Write college application essays • Scholarship/Financial Aid applications • Assessment and reassessment • Senior Project • Note: Through all four years it’s important to continue to engage parents in the process. • Student led conferences
