  10. Browser Tips • What is a web browser? What is an internet session? What is a web session? • All of the above mean the same thing. They are navigation tools (software programs) stored on your computer that allow you to view Web sites on the internet. • Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari (Macs) are some of the most popular browsers. • The USASWeb programs are on a website so in order to access it, you need to use a navigation tool (like one of the tools listed above).

  11. Browser Tips • What is a URL? • An acronym of “Uniform Resource Locator”. This is a unique identifier, or address, of a web page on the internet. • The URL for the USASWeb page is: https://sweb.tccsa.net/usasweb

  12. Browser Tips • What are the recommended browser versions? • Microsoft Internet Explorer V6.0 or higher • Netscape Navigator V7.1 or higher • MAC V10.4: Safari V2.01 or higher – TRWY/WSTR • Earlier MAC versions: Safari V1.2.3. or higher Note: All of our applications are tested to work with Explorer Version 6. If yours doesn’t, please contact us.

  13. Browser Tips • How do I find out the version number of my web browser? • Most browsers have a HELP option. Under HELP, there is an “About…” option which usually displays the version of the web browser you are using:

  14. Browser Tips • How do I “bookmark” my USASWEB login page? • Internet Explorer: Favorites, then “add to favorites” • Firefox/Netscape: Bookmarks, then “bookmark this page” • Safari: Bookmarks, then “Add Bookmark”

  15. Other shortcuts to access USASWEB • Add link to desktop (i.e. Internet Explorer) • Access webpage, click on FILE, then SEND, then SHORTCUT TO DESKTOP • Add link to Browser Toolbar (i.e. Firefox) • Right-click on shortcut bar, select “new bookmark”, enter name and URL address and click on OK

  16. Browser Tips • How can I change the text size in USASWEB? • IE – View > Text Size > Smallest to Largest • Firefox – View > Text Size > increase/decrease

  17. Browser Tips • How can I change the text size in USASWEB • Netscape – View > Text Zoom > Smaller/Larger • Safari – View > Make Text Bigger/Smaller

  18. MAC Browser Tips • MAC Users: • By default, MAC browser will not be able to TAB to a dropdown box or some of the icons (like the add “+” icon). You can change the following settings in order for TAB to work: • SAFARI browser: • Click on “Preferences, then “Advanced, and check the “Press Tab to Highlight each item on a Webpage” checkbox. • FIREFOX browser: • Type about:config in the URL bar. • In the Filter field, type tabfocus • Double-click on the accessibility.tabfocus.preference • Change the value to 7 • Restart your browser

  19. Browser Tips • When downloading a file (i.e. “Saving a Draft”), depending on your browser, you may have the ability to set your browser to prompt you on where you would like the file downloaded to: • Examples: • Directly to your desktop • To a folder on your hard drive (i.e.”My documents” folder)

  20. What does “download” mean? • Downloading: To receive a file from a web page. In any communications session, "download" means receive data, and "upload" means send data. • In our “Save Draft” option, you are downloading the data you are currently entering in USASWEB (i.e. requisition) to your PC (hard drive, C drive, etc). The data you are downloading is formatted as an .XML file (i.e. saving a draft of a requisition, it will call it REQUISITION.XML). The web browser may prompt you where to save the file. Most web browsers will have a default folder that all downloads will be stored in (i.e. “My Documents” folder) so that you can retrieve that information at a later time.

  21. Uploading a File? • Uploading: To send information currently stored on your PC to a web page, program, etc. In our “Load Draft” option, you are uploading data currently stored on your hard drive (i.e. requisition) into the USASWEB/REQ interface. When uploading the file, the “browse” option in LOAD DRAFT will pull up your default “download folder” (i.e. “My Documents” folder) and prompt you to select the data (file) you want to upload into USASWEB. • NOTE: When uploading saved data from your PC into a USASWEB program, you must use the LOAD DRAFT option.

  22. Want to share a website? Here’s 1 way to do it! • Copy the address from the Address Bar in your web browser, open your email application, create a new message and paste the link…. • Note: there ARE other ways, but for our purposes & to make this class pertinent to all, the above is the suggested method for achieving the desired result.
