  2. To-do today • Mrs. Javidan collect homework (worksheet) • Complete worksheet for warm-up; combination of context clues • To Think About… • Finish the “Emilio” chapter. With your group, chose 10-12 words from the book and write definitions for them using context clues. Choose 2-3 words from each page.

  3. To think about • What are you thankful for? • Figure out these words through context. Write a sentence using one word on your slip of paper when you figure it out. • Share your answers with the class.

Definition Clues • 100 – The lawyer wants to change the venue (place where an event is held) of his client’s trial • 200 – Zoologists, people who study animals, are particularly interested in dragonflies, but everyone can enjoy their colors and shapes. • 300 – He majored in archaeology, the study of prehistoric cultures. • 400 – Mathematicians use a tool called a protractor to measure angles • 500 – Her solution to the problem was pragmatic (sensible and practical).

  15. Comparison Clues • 100 – Like my father’s commands, my mother’s orders seem reasonable. • Water and fuel are both precious natural resources. Just as we need to conserve fuel, we need to save water, especially in times of drought. • 300 – This article will give you some tips to help keep you pet cool in the summer heat. Your veterinarian can give you some suggestions, too. • 400 – The whole team was let downwhen we lost the game, and the coach was just as disappointed. • 500 – I’m terrified of snakes. Similarly, I am scared of spiders.

  16. Contrast Clues • 100 – The temperature varies a lot. In contrast, the temperature in my hometown usually stays the same. • 200 – Lisa is a diligent student, but her sister doesn’t work hard in school. • 300 – One of my roommates is loquacious, but the other one rarely talks at all. • 400 – When you told me the story, it sounded incredible. But now that I’ve more about it, the story seems believable. • 500 – I usually like to plan everything down to the smallest detail. However, I try to be more spontaneous when I go on vacation.

  17. Example clues • 100 - Jessie is an indulgentmother. For instance, she lets her daughter eat as much candy as she wants, stay up late, and miss school. • 200 - White-collar workers, such as doctors, work in offices. Blue-collar workers, such as construction workers, word outside. • 300 – Alan is a very frugal person. For example, he always tries not to spend his money400 – Ever since I was a child, I have liked to play percussion instruments like drums. • 500 – Most apes, such as gorillas and chimpanzees, are very social animals.

  18. Surprise Clue • 100 - I am thankful for my sturdy, warm house. In contrast, some people’s houses fall down easily and are cold. • 200 - I am thankful for my vivacious, or lively, son. • 300 - I am thankful that my family is within proximal driving distance. In contrast, some people’s families are hundreds of miles away, which is very far. • 400 - I am thankful for my consistent job. I never have to worry that my job will change. • 500 - I am thankful for my freedom, or choice to do what I want, in my country.
