  1. Autonomous SystemsSensors – The Front End of ISR Mr. Patrick M. Sullivan SPAWAR ISR/IO National Competency Lead SSC-Pacific ISR/IO Department Head

  2. CNO SSG XXVIII Theme Innovative Concepts for Unmanned Systems: • Operational and tactical employment across domains • show how manned/unmanned systems will complement each other • Range of systems in terms of size, capability, numbers, and degree of modularity • Review the decision methodology for transitioning from manned to unmanned platforms • Assess communications and networking requirements for operational employment • Address potential common vehicle control methodologies • Strategy for future development of autonomy

  3. UUV / USV Systems Attributes • Provide a distributed, adaptive system for desired warfare areas • Deploy at long range, transit autonomously • Clusters of autonomous vehicles with detection capability • A mix of sensors on vehicles • Environmental adaptation to increase system Pd, lower Pfa • Coverage using multiple clusters • Minimize number of clusters by recent innovations in: • Intelligent autonomy • Acomms, RF Comms, Optical Comms • Environmental Exploitation • Mobility • Signal Processing

  4. UUV / USV Enhanced Detections - Clusters, Increased Surveillance Range / Duration • Optimize UUVs for range-persistence criteria, install interoperability (comms, autonomy) • Implement diverse sensors, strategies to improve node-cluster Pd, Pfa • Demonstrate delivery vehicle flexibility for docking-power-up • Test System-of-Systems Optimization strategies • Demonstrate/ Evaluate adaptive, intelligent autonomy and artificial intelligence (clusters)

  5. UUV / USV Systems-of-Systems, Adaptive Clusters, and Secure Communications • Demonstrate autonomous aperture formation • Implement multi-sensor cueing • Adapt autonomously to the environment • Integrate and demonstrate systems-to-systems communications • Optimize the UUVs for autonomous deployment of clusters • Increased persistence • Increase area surveillance

  6. UAS Challenges Ahead • Sufficient autonomy to enable 1 operator / large N UAS • Autonomy in the on-board processing to mitigate BW limitations • Much more data than pipes, can’t move it all… • Seamless integration into manned A/C operations

  7. UAS Challenges Ahead, cont’d • Fielding the right sensors to counter low-contrast foes • Adaptable / modular mission packages? • Interoperability / limit proliferation of proprietary control systems • Mission control systems and platform sensor products have to interface with legacy and emerging PORs • JUMPS, DCGS-N, ISNS, etc. • Need well defined standards, open architecture

  8. Control/Mission Planning Human/unmanned system interaction & collaboration Example: Intuitive and intelligent data fusion and representation for human comprehension Perception/Sensing Safety of operations: replace “See and Avoid” with “sense and avoid” Staying on task despite lost communications/instructions Example: 3D Simuiltaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) GPS denied navigation in unstructured environments Learning/Reasoning Learning decision architectures: Safety vs Mission across the range of operations Integration across the full range of complex operations Example: Cognitive models for UxV architectures Autonomy Outline 8
