1. EGNOS for freight transport and logistics

2. Why EGNOS for freight transport and logistics • Attractive market for a value added Service Provider: • Size • Interest from users • Applications exploiting EGNOS • Business cases benefitting from EGNOS • EGNOS adding value to GPS today, and in preparation to Galileo

3. Opportunities • Huge potential: • Big volumes of goods transported in EU and extra-EU* • Various transport modalities • Different stakeholders/liability schemes in the supply chain • Big players • Various institutions and decision-makers • Need for: • Traceability • Precise, reliable and real-time information • Wide coverage • Cost-effectiveness • Integration • Good ITS penetration in EU fairly increasing (evolving towards interoperable systems) • (* sources: Eurostat, OECD)

4. Challenges • Fragmented market • International dimension (mainly for containers) • Heterogeneity, mostly depending on the modality of shipping: • Different requirements and environments (land-based/rail-road-inland waterways, containerized/maritime-inland waterways, terminals/ports/interports) • Variety of goods • Various standards, standardization bodies and regulatory frameworks • Complex operational scenarios and constraints • Slow GPS penetration in EU (often compared with different technologies) • Key drivers for the market uptake: • Technology for the terminals, availability of products and relevant customization flexibility (technology and costs) to fit specific needs • Operational costs (including change of procedures and training)

5. State of play of EGNOS in freight transport and logistics (1) • R&D projects for • Knowledge of the market/promotion • Opportunities/priorities identification • Technology development • Technical feasibility demonstration • Added value/benefits validation • Were we are now • Heterogeneous maturity depending on the specific mode of transport

6. State of play of EGNOS in freight transport and logistics (2) • Multimodal containers/asset transport • Prototypes extensively proven, now evolving in products • Small-scale operations • Over inland EU and extra-EU (North Africa) supply chains • Users and stakeholders awareness increasing • Real business cases exploiting EGNOS • Sustainability for EGNOS OS and EGNOS EDAS depending on: • Specific business case • Specific type of goods • Specific supply chain/traffic (inland EU or extra-EU) • Some policies to slightly incentivize GNSS introduction

7. State of play of EGNOS in freight transport and logistics (3) • Applications • Containers tracking & tracing • Intermodal asset tracking • Business cases • Special traffic and “dual use” goods (e.g. tobacco) • High-value goods • Perishables

8. State of play of EGNOS in freight transport and logistics (4) • Technology • 11,7 cm width • 72,2 cm length • 2,5 cm thick GPS+EGNOS OS and EGNOS EDAS (CWA 16390 compliant) through Two communication: GPRS/Sat communication (back-up) Remotely configurable polling rate Motion sensors At least 6 months autonomy at a polling rate of 1 fix/day Rechargeable batteries Exterior mounting with magnets or screws

9. EGNOS added value for users • EGNOS OS • More precise localization • EGNOS EDAS • Higher reliability • Information trustable and independent from operator • Enhanced law enforcement and safety • Possible commercial benefits • Facilitation of customs procedures (e.g. extra-EU, “green corridors”) • Quality contract

10. Lessons learnt • Roadmap for EGNOS market uptake: • Different for EGNOS OS and EGNOS EDAS, with common actions • Tailored on specific business case, e.g. type of goods and mode of transport • Institutions able to stimulate and incentivize (e.g. new business models/sustainability) • Fitting in existing/on-going standardization rather than standalone standardization effort (e.g. “Data Goods Device”, TAP-TSI) to fill the gaps • Introduction in extra-EU enlarging exploitation in EU • Galileo perspective strengthening opportunities for EGNOS

11. Key actions • Facilitating use of EGNOS OS • Exploiting combination with complementary technologies • Targeting large-scale operations on specific business cases: • To launch best practices • To tune business models and operational procedures • For benefits verification • Ensuring cooperation with key players: • Big users • Users associations • Terminal manufacturers
