  3. Cycling as a Solution Introduction and themes of the day Olly Glover, Greater Manchester Cycling Campaign

  4. The challenge for cycle campaigners • Our passion and commitment to cycling are clear • The benefits of cycling are (almost painfully) obvious to us... • ... but alien to most • (Perceived) barriers: • “I’m not fit enough” • “I can’t shop by bike” • “I need a laptop for work” • “I’m too scared to cycle on busy and crime-ridden streets”

  5. “It’s a no” • Context (in Greater Manchester) of overwhelming popular rejection of moderate congestion charging, and sustainable transport investment • Positive promotion and campaigning to improve conditions needed to weaken strong ties between people and cars

  6. Time to get real • A radical shift in UK transport policy in favour of cycling seems unlikely • Therefore, WE’re going to have to do the hard work! • How can we successfully share our passion for cycling? • Press the case using five key themes: • Health • Wealth • Environment • Community • Style • Sharpen up our skills and ideas: • Media management • Clear communication • Engaging our communities and leaders • Alliance of national and local campaigners

  7. Purpose of the conference • Exploration of the advantages / benefits of cycling • Share ideas and experiences • Gain skills and knowledge through workshops • Make new contacts and allies

  8. Religion or solution? • Our passion for cycling is a source both of fascination and intimidation to non-cyclists • So, when campaigning, let’s have: • ‘Cycling as a solution’... • ... Rather than ‘cycling as a religion’
