Proposed solution to cleanly dump lost Pb beams from LEIR machine to avoid detrimental effects on machine vacuum and ensure higher intensity post LS2. Study for different beams underway, with installation during LS2 with EN/STI resources considered.

A new LEIR dump? • Pb beams prepared by LEIR for the LHC are lost in LEIR machine when undesired by the LHC (Extraction kickers inhibited) • Pb beams prepared by LEIR for MDs are extracted towards the PS and lost on the PS septum • Both cases have detrimental effects on the vacuum of the machines • It would make sense to cleanly dump those beams, especially in view of the higher intensity foreseen for after LS2. • Pb54+ beams, 72MeV/nucleon, 2x109 ions every 3.6 secondsH=6mm ; sH=4mm • Other species before LS2 only: • Ar11+beams, 81MeV/nucleon, 3x109ions every 2.4 second • Xe54+ beams, 97MeV/nucleon, ?x109 ??? ions every 2.4 second • Similar dump has been studied earlier for a different case but same beam specifications • Installation during LS2 (earlier is welcome if EN/STI has resources) • Budget? Manpower? Timeline?
Principle of dump • Pb beams prepared by LEIR will always be extracted • If PS or LHC not ready ETL.BHN10 inhibited • Dump at end of “Y” vacuum chamber for beam going straight
