  2. New Pb-Pb baseline

  3. For the record (you probably can’t read this…) • Linac 3 • Increased intensity, towards nominal performance as in design report: 50eA of Pb54+ for 200 s • Pulsing at 10 Hz (currently 5Hz). • Possibly lengthen the pulse to 230s • LEIR • Up to 12 injections from Linac 3 (10Hz), 3.6 s cycle, extraction of 2 bunches at 72MeV/u towards PS • Increase of performance needed compared to 2013 p-Pb run: same emittances but intensity at least 40% higher (8.6E10 charges in 2 bunches, or 7.8E8 Pb 54+ ions/bunch) • PS • same RF gymnastics as what was “nominal” in design report: • batch expansion (h = 16 -> 14 -> 12) • splitting to 4 bunches (h = 12 -> 24) • batch expansion (h = 24 -> 21) • acceleration to 26GeV/c/charge on h=21 • at high energy, rebucketing at h = 169 • SPS • On flat bottom: accumulation of 2x6 PS batches using Q20 optics • Improvements on RF noise (fixed harmonic system on flat bottom) • Switch to fixed frequency for acceleration of 48 bunches • Momentum Slip stacking at intermediate energy, away from transition, to merge the two trains into one, with 50 ns bunch spacing. • Repeat ~52 (26x2) times for filling each LHC ring with up to 1248 bunches

Projected beam parameters (1) stripper stages between Linac3 & LEIR, then between PS & SPS; parameters before/after stripping(2) corresponding to the maximum bunch intensity(3) average intensity taking into account the distribution of bunch intensities along the train(4) For LEIR: at end of flat bottom, just before acceleration.(5) Assuming 7.5MV RF voltage.

In Linac3 • Pulsing at 10Hz • To be tested before LS2 (i.e. last Pb run in 2018), needs installing at Xmas 2017 • In baseline; cost partly covered by consolidation • New LBS line • Part of “nice to have” but approved in baseline for 1MCHF. If more expensive, needs to come from consolidation. • Needed after LS2 once L4 connected to PSB • New/improved optics for LEBT • Included in baseline • ASAP for studies in LEIR with increased Pb current • Oven Test Stand • Already started (?) • In baseline • Ion Source Test Stand • No budget as of today (is there manpower?)
