  1. Do Now: • Explain this picture?

  2. Do Now part II: • Brad Pitt's role in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" was based on a real life medical condition. Progeria, also known as Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria syndrome, it is a disease that accelerates the aging process when a child is 18 to 24 months old. As the child grows, some symptoms include hair loss, a small face, thin skin, loss of body fat, and a short stature. Children with Progeria age six to eight times faster than the average person and rarely live past the age of 13, due to heart disease. Only about 100 cases of Progeria have ever been formally diagnosed in medical history. They believe it is caused by a mutation in the gene called LMNA, which makes the Lamin A protein. A effective Lamin A protein causes instability of cells which appear to lead to the process of premature aging.

  3. Homework was • Text Book – Chapter 1 Review notes and reading assignments from this past week. Be ready for a quiz (open notebook quiz on anything covered including key terms).

  4. Tonight’s Homework • Chapter 2, pages 34 – 38 • Read and define the following terms: • Nucleus Molecule • Electron Covalent Bond • Proton Ions • Element Van der Waals Forces • Isotopes • Compound • Ionic Bond

  5. Quick Review Stable Environment – homeostasis Human body temperature 98.6o If the body gets hot or cold Then the body reacts to return to homeostasis. As the body continues to move away from homeostasis, death becomes more likely. Known as Positive Feedback Loop (moving away from homeostasis). Negative Feedback Loop, returning to homeostasis.

  6. Stimulus Stimulus – Cell responds to internal or external stimuli. This is crucial for evolution. If an organism has the environment that changes (cold) the organism has three choices. • Adapt • Move • Die Those that remain and survive are now evolving into a slightly different species. For example, Eskimos have evolved to live in the cold to the point if they live in warm weather they struggle.

  7. New material Metabolism – take in a source of food to digest to survive and produce energy.

  8. Reminder of work • Chapter 2, pages 34 – 38 • Read and define the following terms: • Nucleus Molecule • Electron Covalent Bond • Proton Ions • Element Van der Waals Forces • Isotopes • Compound • Ionic Bond
