Physical Change • Female • Breast develop (8 years old) • Menarche - 2 years after • Fully developed 12-18 • Menstruation - 9 to 16, avg 12 • Pubic hair, armpit and leg hair - 9 or 10, adult pattern - 13 to 14 • Growth spurt - 11.5 (peak) to 16 • Male • Testicles and scrotum - 9 years • Scrotum length increases until 17-18 yrs old (voice changes) • Pubic, armpit, leg, chest, facial hair - 12 yrs, adult pattern at 17-18 • Nocturnal emission - beginning of puberty 13-17, avg 14.5 • Growth spurs - 13.5 (peak then slows around 18 yrs

  4. Formation of Identity • The age of 12 - 18 is where we discover and form our own identity that most of us will be like that rest of your life. • Difficult, some crisis, tension may happen between parent/s and child/ren due to their strive for independent • Passé

  5. Passe - Internet • Web • Social media • No middle man in changing roles • Swap into different roles • Privacy and feel safe

  6. Watch Out • Suicide • Signs/change in behavior • Self-esteem • Very sensitive about their body • Peer pressure • Pros and cons • Change in behavior • More rebellious, cliques, friendship that later will turn into romantic

Morality and Cognitive/Social Development • Piaget’s Theory • 1920’s • Age 10, develop the morality of cooperation • Recognize different ways to approach a problem • Younger age - laws are indisputable - not solely on outcome of decisions • Reciprocity - not always exact • Frontal and parietal cortex develop rapidly • Learn what is right and wrong to say • More understanding of reality (later in adolescence) • More abstract thinking/critical thinking • More likely to engage in political debates
