Single Displacement • Contains one compound and a single element as reactants. • Follows the following format: • A + BC ---> AC + B
Balance These! • Cl2 + NaBrNaCl + Br2 • Mg + HCl MgCl2 + H2
Double Displacement • Reactants are two compounds which swap one element each in the products • Follows the following format: • AB + CD ---> AD + CB
Balance These! • Fe2O3 + HCl FeCl3 + H2O • Pb(NO3)2 + K2S PbS + KNO3
Synthesis Reactions • Two single elements combine to form one compound • Follows the following format: • A + B ---> AB
Balance These! • Fe + S8FeS • Al + O2 Al2O3
Decomposition Reactions • One compound breaks down into its individual atoms • Follows the following format: • AB ---> A + B
Balance These! • H2O H2 + O2 • C6H12O6C + H2O
Combustion Reactions • A Hydrocarbon meets oxygen and turns into Carbon Dioxide and Water • Follows the following format: • CxHy+O2 CO2+H2O
These are tricky to balance. I am not going to torture you with any of these right now!
Predicting Products • Use the reaction formats to predict the products in the following reactions, then balance the equations. • CH4 + 2O2 • KOH + CuSO4 • Zn + HCl • H2O2 • P + Br2
