  4. Air Quality in Alaska? Well............ some things like toxic garbage burning can be controlled

  5. Air Quality Education and Outreach • Improving Health through Environmental Education and Outreach? • Knowledge is Power • Local Peoples (Tribes) are first responders • All Things are connected (Universe)‏

  6. AITC's Air Quality Projects • Cooperative Agreement with U.S. EPA to develop Clean Air Act projects • Provide tools for villages to improve public and community health • Increase Tribal capacity to manage air quality issues • Education and outreach to reduce health risks to the People

  7. AITC Development Areas 3 main Areas 1) Website-- ANUQA 2) IAQ in the schools-- pilot projects 3) Demonstration Projects-- improving community health from the village

  8. Website • ANUQA-- North Pacific and Bering Sea Indigenous Peoples word meaning “wind/ fresh air moving” • Website is designed for Alaska villages as an information resource • Still under development and feedback is welcome • http://anuqa.net

  9. IAQ in the Schools • “Air Toxics Under the North Star” (Great Bear)‏ • 3 Pilot Projects in collaboration with University of Montana 1) Hoonah 2) Wasilla 3) Tok

  10. IAQ in the Schools (cont.)‏ • Based on Big Sky Model connecting negative human health outcomes with bad air toxics through air quality education in schools • Students do hands on monitoring with Dust Trak (monitor) in science class • Experience in environmental sciences

  11. Demonstration Projects • Mini-grant awards-- reduce air pollution risks through education and outreach • supports village based air quality projects with community collaboration • 3 selected- Port Lions Village, Orutsararmiut Native Council, Seldovia Village
