  4. The Basics • The legislative branch of Georgia is known as the GENERAL ASSEMBLY • It is made up of a State SENATEand a State HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES • State Senate • 56members • State House of Representatives • 180members

Qualifications • State Senators (SENATE) • Must be at least 25 • LIVEin the DISTRICTthey represent • Legal resident of GEORGIAfor at least 2years • State Representatives (HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES) • Must be at least 21 • LIVEin the DISTRICTthey represent • Legal resident of GEORGIAfor at least 2years

  6. Terms and Elections • Terms and Elections: • Senators and representatives are elected to 2year terms • Legislators are elected in EVENnumber years during general elections • How much are they paid? • $17,000 (about) 2012 2014 2016 2018 2020 2022 2024

When does the General Assembly meet? • They are “in session” beginning on the 2nd Monday of JANUARYeach year. • The law-making session lasts 40days. • Most important duty is making LAWSand passing BUDGET(proposed by governor) “SINE DIE!!!!!” = without assigning a day for further meeting or hearing

  8. Organization of the General Assembly and Leadership • The most important leader of the Senate is the Lieutenant GOVERNOR. He/she is the PRESIDINGOFFICERorpresident of the Senate (leader of Senate), and he/she DOES NOT have a VOTEin the Senate. VOTE

Organization of the General Assembly and Leadership • The most important leader of the House of Representatives is the SPEAKERof the House. • He/she has the ability to appoint committees, assign bills to committees, recognize people to speak like the LIEUTENTANTGovernor, and he/she does have a VOTEwhen it is necessary to break a TIE. TIEBREAKER VOTE
