  7. Go to a College fair, what do freshman want to know, what do you think the game should play like, what technology do they use now

  8. Research Methods

  9. Research Insights

  10. research thoughts insights designs

  11. Introduction Mini Game Descriptions World Description Story Mechanics **Note: design doc is 25 pages

  12. Mini Game Descriptions Time, scoring, weather, Collision detection

  13. Building the prototype

  14. Fan of the Xbox360, cool factor • Feasible • Code Once deploy 3 times

  15. Prototype Overview Walking around campus (low detail) ( Prototype Process ) Little 500 Mini Game ( MiniGame Process ) IU Cross Mini Game ( MiniGame Process )

  16. Prototype Process Overview SketchUp - Create Model Import Model XNA GSE 2.0 Create logic / Compile Vehicle to send to Xbox 360

  17. Prototype Creation Tools SketchUp! • Google SketchUp! • Used for 3d models • direct download of models from 3d warehouse • - Free Trial Pro version

  18. Prototype Creation Tools • XNA Game Studio 2.0 • flavor of C# • direct integration with MS VS 2005 • the “glue” for models and logic

  19. Prototype Creation Tools • Visual Studio 2005 • developing environment • brains of the operation • XNA add-in

  25. Prototype Little 500 Little 500 before after

  26. Live Prototype Demo yes we are going to play games

  27. Design/ Usability Test

  28. Prototype Design/Usability Test Results 3d Model of campus Comments on virtual environment: “it’s neat to see IMU in a game” “hard to see buildings” “where am I at, I can’t find Franklin Hall, I need some landmark”

  29. Prototype Design/Usability Test Results IU CROSS – design critique Likert Rating: 4.8 (1 , low to 7, high) Common Problems: “ to hard at first”, Stuff that worked: “became fun once I understood it, and I learned something at the end”

  30. Prototype Design/Usability Test Results Little 500 Racing – design critique Likert Rating: 6.4 (1 , low to 7, high) Common Problems: “ hard to steer”, “need to be on a bike” Stuff that worked: All testers commented on potential and desire to play this mini game again

  31. Prototype Design/Usability Test Results Reflection on my experience • Designing a game is hard • thousands of possible interactions • needs a lot of iteration • Had some successes (Little 500) • Had a lot of failure (IU Cross, Little 500) • Need a lot more user testing with a greater variety of users

  32. Future Possibilities Future Design Critique -more usability / design critiques -more access to all target groups -meet with informers at IU Admin office -direct email/mail info from game -communication with 2nd life creating multiplatform space -communication with an recruitment advisor -Xbox Live deployment Future Technical Work

  33. HCI Big Picture • What does this mean for HCI • Found a way to create 3d prototype worlds • cheap way that can be highly interactive • will only get better and more powerful

  34. Thanks to the following: Jeff Bardzell Nick Bell (Sketchup Guru) Erik Stolterman Marty Siegel Julie Gerlach Mike and Becky Hankins (parents) Andy Trus User Test Subjects Everyone at the IU Admissions Office All friends and colleagues in HCI/d
