Greek Religion Religion affected every aspect of Greek life Temples dedicated to gods & goddesses Ritual ceremonies often involved prayer and gifts to gods or goddesses Festivals developed to honor gods & goddesses Olympia to honor Zeus Delphi to honor Apollo 1st games held at the Olympic festival in 776BC

  4. Greek Religion People had desire to know the will of the gods Made use of oracle (sacred shrine where a god reveals future through priest(ess). Oracle at Delphi Ex. Priestess listens to questions from people (responses often puzzling or interpreted in more than 1 way) Romans adopt Greek gods Greek gods and goddesses appear in literature

Parthenon for Athena) Outdoor theaters in religious festivals Dramas (called tragedies) written in trilogies (3’s) Oedipus Rex: Oracle of Apollo tells him he will kill his father & marry his mother. Oedipus does everything he can to stop it, but it happens.
