Louis XIV In 1643, Louis inherits the throne (only 4 years old) France ruled by his mother & Cardinal Mazarin the Chief Minister Takes the throne in 1661 Decided to have control and decision in every aspect of government Absolutism- ruler holds total power; believed power given from God Called the Sun God because he wanted the France to revolve around him 1st king to rule without a Chief Minister

  4. Government & Religion Established royal court at Versailles One of the largest palaces in the world House of king Location of offices Believed nobles & princes were danger to the throne Decided to keep them busy with lavish parties

  5. Government & Religion Bribed officials to control local government & carry out policies Launched anti-Protestant policy to convert Huguenots (Protestants influenced by Calvinism) to Catholicism Destroyed their schools & churches Flee to England & Germany

Economy & War -cost of palace & courts created financial strains -Minister of Finance Jean Baptiste Colbert suggests to increase exports Build more roads, bridges, & canals for transportation Created standing army Waged 4 wars from 1667-1713 War results in famine, causing many people to turn against him Died in 1715, leaving France a huge debt
