  1. Beloved An Introduction

  2. Essential Questions • How do we balance the needs of the individual with the needs of society? • What is the value of remembering the horrors brought on by traumatic events? When can memories pose problems to the individual? • What does it mean to achieve freedom? • How is identity created and how is it taken away?

  3. Ain’t I a Woman? • Watch/Read and Annotate your copy of Sojourner Truth’s speech. • Discuss the following questions: • What are Truth’s messages about both race relations AND gender equality? • How is a woman—and a mother—in an especially good position to demonstrate the inhumanity of slavery?

  4. Morrison’s Foreword to Beloved • Read and annotate Morrison’s Foreword • What ideas here appear essential as you begin your journey through the text? • What does Morrison tell you about her narrative style and purpose?

  5. Images • For each reading, you will need to find 2-4 quotes for your images (more or less depending on the frequency of the image in different assignments). Write/type out quotes in a list with page number citations. • As we continue reading, annotate the quotes to find patterns and make meaning from images.
