EPA Emission Requirement Tier 4 LET THE TRAIN TAKE YOU THERE… • Tier 4 applicable for engines built after January 1st 2011 • NTP is expected at the earliest in July 2010; too late to order Tier 3 engines • Tier 4 implications on vehicle: • Larger engine cooling equipment • Particulate filter in exhaust pipe • SCR equipment and urea tank to eliminate NOx emissions. • Tier 4 is applicable to FRA and non-FRA compliant DMUs • Expected engine replacement in 2020. • Replacement engines will have to be Tier 4 compliant. This means the DMUs would have to be substantially upgraded at that time after only 5 to 6 years in service.
