  1. Keys to success Career and Life Skills Grade

  2. Learning Target • Understanding the career and life skills grading objectives for 8th Grade Language Arts

  3. What is it? • Your career and life skills grade is showing your readiness for high school, college, career and your future. • They are tools that you show in class that can predict how successful you will be in high school and other areas of life.

  4. What is it based on? • ROAR • Respectful • On-task • Able • Responsible

  5. Career and Life Skill Grade • Each day you will receive 2 points. • Based on your behaviors in ROAR, you will have points taken away. • At the end of the week, I look back at my chart and I enter your score. • This score cannot be altered or “made up” or fixed. Once it is entered, it stays.

  6. So how does it work? • Each day I will be observing you for certain skills that show that you are ready for high school.

  7. Respectful • When you are in this classroom, you must demonstrate respectful behaviors. • What does it mean to be respectful? • In your journal, list some behaviors that demonstrate respect. • In high school, college, and your career, you are expected to be respectful to other students, your co-workers, boss, and customers. • Example: I show I am respectful when I listen to students when they have a question.

  8. Behaviors demonstrating respect • Respect is treating others the way you want to be treated. It is also not taking away something that is belongs to someone else. • In this country, everyone has a right for an education. We do not take this right away by our bad choices. • Not blurting • Listening to the speaker • Not causing distractions • Not disrupting class • Not taking or touching other person’s property or selves.

  9. On-Task • What does it mean to be on-task? • Students should be on-task throughout class. • In your journal list some behaviors that demonstrate on-task. • In high school, college, and your career, you need to demonstrate that you are capable of doing your work and focusing when it is required of you. • Example: I show I am on-task when I am working with students in my classroom.

  10. Behaviors that demonstrate on-task • Listening • Working on your assignment during work time. • Reading during SSR. • Following a lesson. • Asking questions and seeking help appropriately

  11. Able • Showing that you are able means you are not helpless. You are able to demonstrate your ability to do what is expected of you. • In your journal, write down some ways you can demonstrate that you are able. • In your high school, college, and career, you will be expected to show you are able to do the work and meet the challenges. Helplessness is not a desired trait. • Example: I show I am able when I go to my PLC meetings with my data prepared.

  12. Behaviors that demonstrate Able • Making attempts at your work • Handing in work on time • Showing that you are trying to understand or can understand a skill. • Asking for help appropriately. • Being in your seat on time. • Doing your best work.

  13. Responsible • Responsibility is a sign of maturity. Responsible individuals understand that their rewards match their actions. • In your journal, write what behaviors show responsibility. • In high school, college, and your career, your actions must show that you are able to take responsibility. You will not be able to do well in the future without demonstrating responsibility. • Example: I show I am responsible when I come to work on time.

  14. Actions that show responsibility • You are here on time and in your seat. • You bring necessary supplies • You finish your assignments and turn them in on time. • You are following directions

  15. Each day you have 2 points. • You may lose points if you… • Don’t have your reading book on Thursdays • Don’t have basic supplies with you • Come tardy • Disrupt class • Blurt • Have missing assignments • Do not use work time in class appropriately • Do not treat others (teacher including) the way you would want to be treated.

  16. 10 points each week. • If you receive a failing grade at the end of the week for behaviors, you may have additional consequences. • I notify parents, coaches, and administration. • I start with a paper document, but I actually will use an app eventually that you will be able to download on your iPad and can follow your own ROAR behaviors in class. • Does this mean you aren’t going to make mistakes? We all do. But you just have to stop and put your best foot forward.
