Do Now • In your notebook answer the following question (do not write the question down) • The United States of France • When Britain controlled the colonies, France tried several times to take control of North America. Imagine what North America would be like today if France had succeeded. • What would we eat, wear, do for fun? • What would we believe? • What do you think today’s lesson is about?

  2. The French and Indian War

Background • England, Spain, France, and the Netherlands were fighting to expand their own empires and that fight soon came to North America. • What do you already know about these countries and their North American territories? • French occupied west of the Appalachian Mountains • Spain occupied Florida • Dutch used to own New York & New Jersey

Once France tried to keep the English colonies out of the Ohio Valley the Native Americans took notice of them fighting for what was Native American land. • “You & the French are like the two edges of a pair of shears. And we are the cloth which is to be cut to pieces between them” ~a Native American • What does this quote mean? • Stuck in the middle

The war in North America from 1754 to 1763 in Europe it was called the 7 years war • Most Native American Indians fought on the side of the French (Algonquin & Hurons) • Why did the Algonquin & Hurons side with the French? • Because the French trappers and traders that didn’t destroy Indian hunting grounds • Many French trappers married Indian women and adopted their culture • Although few did fight on the side of the English (Iroquois) • Why did the Iroquois take sides with the English? • The enemy of my enemy is my friend • The Iroquois were old enemies of the Algonquin and Huron people

The War begins… • Why did they call this war the French and Indian War? • Because it was the French and Indians against the English (and Iroquois) • The war began when the English became alarmed at the Forts being built by the French in the Ohio River Valley. • The first battle ends with George Washington surrendering to the French at Fort Necessity

Albany Congress • While Washington was at Fort Necessity… • Delegates from 7 colonies gathered in Albany, NY • To form a strong alliance with the Iroquois • To plan a united colonial defense • The Albany Plan of Union • To create “one general gov’t” for the 13 colonies • No one approved it • No colonies wanted to give up their power • Ben Franklin, “Everyone cries a union is necessary. But when they come to the manner and form or the union, their weak noodles are perfectly distracted” • What does this mean? • Everyone wants the same thing, but can’t agree on how to make it happen

  8. Braddock Marches to Duquesne • June 1755: Braddock sets out from Virginia British troops & blue-coated colonial militias including George Washington as one of his aids • Braddock’s army took several weeks to trek through dense forest to Fort Duquesne • July 9, 1755: Native American Warriors and French troops ambushed Braddock and his men • The British lost the battle & their Commander in Chief General Edward Braddock • The losing streak for the English would last for two more years…
