  1. The Global Geographer Unit 1

  2. QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE YOU USE A TEXTBOOK • What is the main purpose of this text? • To introduce and familiarize students with global issues using the geographic approach • When was this book written? • It was published in 2000 so the information is at least 12 years old • DO NOT rely on any statistics in the book, only theory • Case studies in geography should mostly be within the last 10 years

  3. Questions to ask yourself… • How is this book organized? What type of information is in it? • Are there problems that will make it more difficult to use the book (access the information?)

  4. FOUR MAIN SECTIONS OF CHAPTER 1 • The Subject Matter • The Method • The Concepts • Conclusion: The Case for Global Geography

  5. SUBJECT MATTER of Geography • This section attempts to show why and how geography is a useful and important way to look at the world. • It includes several extra boxes – some case studies, and the UN website along with a suggestion for independent study. • Look at the geographic questions on page 3.. As a class, we will pick one and pick it apart

  6. What are the underlying assumptions of the question? • What data do you need to answer it? • How might you present that data? (would it be better as a graph, a photo, a map or a cartoon?)

  7. Questions from the first section • Complete the Sustainable Development Worksheet

  8. METHOD OF GEOGRAPHY • Which part of the text do you find easiest or best? The bold list of steps on page 8 or the flow chart on page 9? • Using the steps in the flow chart as an example, create a plan to study where a new landfill should be located in East Hants http://maps.google.ca/maps?ct=reset
