  1. RISE OF WOMEN IN US HISTORY BY: ANISHA J. YASMIN K. KELLY W. MELISSA V.

  2. PROMPT To what extent and in what ways did the role of women change in American society between 1790 and 1860? Respond with reference to TWO of the following areas: domestic, economic, political, social.

  3. CONTEXT From 1791 to 1860 the role of women began to change in society. Women had been restricted by a patriarchal structure for so long, but during the 19th century women began to transform their identity. Women were no longer valued for only their ability to birth children, work in the house, and tend to family. American society became more dependent on women as they began to show their worth.

  4. THESIS Between 1790 and 1860 the role of women in American society drastically changed socially and economically by women playing a key role in the Market Revolution, taking part in activist reform movements, and creating a new identity for American women.

  5. ANALYSIS During the Market Revolution, women’s roles transferred from life inside the home to working in factories. As America transformed into a more urban society, it was mainly women who were involved with manufacturing and textile factories. This was due to the fact that factory work consisted of lower wages which was efficient for the economy. Along with the involvement in factories, women were still expected to do housework and educate the children.

  6. analysis Women also took part in anti slavery and abolition movements. One of the most notable movements for women was the women’s rights movement taken place at seneca falls convention. The leaders elizabeth cady stanton and lucretia mott came up with a declaration of women’s rights called the Declaration of Sentiments which was based upon the declaration of independence that “all men and women are created equal”.

  7. Analysis Women began gaining more rights; the married women’s property act made it so women no longer had to rely on their spouse for income. Women also reshaped their identity by partaking more professions such as teaching. Work was no longer viewed as solely a thing exclusive for men as women’s professions expanded beyond the house.

  8. SYNTHESIS In relation to other revolutions and substantial events throughout history, the Market Revolution was a facilitator for the liberation of America’s unspoken heroes - women. Despite the drastic social and economic changes women implemented in American society, the patriarchy remained strong and women had to fight much longer for their right to vote.
