  3. Step 1: Restate the Question • Restating the question is probably the easiest step, but is it also the MOST important step in the process. Restating the question… • Helps the writer better understand the question • Gives the writer a focused way to begin their response • Leads the writer into the next step of Explaining the topic • How do you Restate the question? • Let’s look at some examples…

  4. What is an Open-ended Question? • What is an open-ended question? • An open ended question asks you to write a response to a question or statement. • How do you answer it? • To successfully respond to an open ended question, you need to be READY!

  5. How to Answer the Open Ended Question

  6. Using Key Words Before you try to Restate the question, look at the question and find key words. Example: Why did Leo have a bad feeling before Stargirlwas interviewed for “Hot Seat”? * Use the key words and restate the sentence. (You will need to add words so it makes sense) Example: Leo had a bad feeling before Stargirl was interviewed on“Hot Seat”.

Restate the Question Examples • Example 1 • Open Ended Question: • What did you do last night when you got home from school? • Restate the question: • Last night when I got home from school I did several things. • Example 2 • Open Ended Question: • Why is it important to be on time for school every day? • Restate the question: • There are several reasons why it is important to be on time for school every day.

More Examples • Example 3 • Open Ended Question: • How do the members of your family enjoy free time together? • Restate the question: • The members of my family enjoy free time together in a number of ways. • Example 4 • Open Ended Question: • How did the three little pigs escape from the big bad wolf? • Restate the question: • The ways that the three little pigs escaped from the big bad wolf were very clever.

  9. Some Thing You Should Be Noticing About How to Restate the Question • It is ONE sentence in length. • You use the same words in the question in your restating sentence. • 3. You are NOT answering the question, you are simply beginning your response by restating the question.

  10. Restating Practice • Open Ended Questions: • 1. What do people do to take care of their pets? • 2. If you do not know a friend’s phone number, how might you find it?

  11. Possible Answers • 1. What do people do to take care of their pets? • People do several different things to take care of their pets. • 2. If you do not know a friend’s phone number, how might you find it? • There are several ways to find a friend”snumber if you do not know it.

  12. Statement of Requests • Sometimes you will be asked to answer a statement. • These questions begin with words such as: explain, compare, describe, discuss.

  13. Statement of Request Examples • Example 1 • Request: • Explain why students must complete homework assignments. • Restating the Request: • There are several reasons why students must complete homework assignments.

  14. Example 2 • Request: • Discuss why it’s important to dress warmly in winter. • Restating the Request: • It is important to dress warmly in winter for a number of reasons.
