Grants for Places of Worship (GPOW): Heritage Preservation and Public Access in the North East

Urgent structural repairs for listed places of worship used for worship at least six times per year. Grants available for capital works in the main place of worship to encourage wider public access. Procurement and accreditation required. Partnership funding and VAT recovery scheme available. Programme outcomes aim to improve heritage condition and engage more people with heritage.

  3. Urgent structural repairs? Listed places of worship? Used for worship at least six times per year?Capital work in main place of worship only? Encouraging wider public access? Essential

  4. ….a brief word about urgency of works and phasing • Identified in recent quinquennial inspection (QI) as urgent in next two years. • Prioritise urgency and only come in with most urgent. • Can re-apply for phased works to HLF

  5. Grants of £10-250K (max £25k for development) • Up to 15% for new works in main place of worship to encourage sustainable use • Encouraging wider public access

  6. Key programme requirements • Accredited conservation professional • Procurement • Open at least 40 days each year outside regular worship • Maximum three year delivery period including activities • Acknowledgement • Partnership funding 5% • Listed Places of Worship VAT Recovery Scheme

  7. Buying …a brief word about buying goods works and services… For any goods or services of £10k to £50k, you must get three quotes, any cost over £50k must be tendered. This will include your architect. If you have recently procured your architect, and that process was in-line with ours, you should not have to procure them again.

  10. GPOW programme outcomes • Heritage in better condition • More people and a wider range of people will have engaged with heritage

  11. Heritage in better condition – urgent capital works • Repairs to make the building structurally sound and wind and water-tight • Must be identified in current Quinquennial Inspection or condition survey as necessary within two years

  12. Which works we don’t fund… • Work to fixtures and fittings • Reconstruction of lost parts of the building • Maintenance or minor repairs

  13. Heritage and communities - activities More people and a wider range of people will have engaged with heritage • Required Outcome • Not just telling us about what you already do! • New activities an opportunity • Costed in budget

  14. New interpretation Real world or virtual guided tours and trails Lecture series Workshops and ‘hands on’ activity Adult/ schools learning New volunteers Activities linked to the repairs e.g. skills taster days Types of activities

  15. New works • Up to 15% of total project costs can be for work to improve the long-term sustainability of the heritage • For example: • New facilities • Improvements to heating and electrical systems • Making it easier to carry out maintenance • Only in the main place of worship • Not a mandatory requirement
