  2. Business English for Schools

  3. The aim of the course • To enlarge the vocabulary in the sphere of economics and business • To develop the pupil’s speaking activities • To study the main ideas and definitions of business • To discuss the ways of making up a business plan • To hold a market research • To form business correspondence skills

  4. PROJECTS • Projects involving hobbies, interests, skills are extremely fruitful for English conversation groups, provided that only English is spoken during a given activity. • A project that provides abundant material for conversation is an imaginary activities. Pupils can write compositions about their future professions, jobs, careers, etc. • Project is a creating situation where pupils can learn from their own experiences.

  5. Project “GET A JOB YOU WANT” “Climb every mountain until your dreams come true…”

  6. Where to work? • Which of us hasn’t asked this question? Which of us has found an appropriate place or has already chosen a job? • Many roads open before us after school, but it’s not easy to make the right choice. • It’s very important to choose a profession that suits your own interests and preferences.

  7. What is a career? Can you imagine, even the Romans had this word and thought about it, but for them the term CARRIERA was “running”, “life road”. And, really, now for many people who want to build their future career, a job is almost the most important thing, the aim of their life, their “LIFE ROAD”.

  8. Choosing a career “If we didn’t think about future, we couldn’t have it” John Galsworthy Choosing a career and getting a job are two of the most important things any person does in a lifetime. When you leave school you understand that the time to choose your future career has come. It’s not an easy task to make the right choice of a job. It’s good when you get satisfaction from your job. It’s very important to choose a profession that suits your interests. A job should be interesting and socially important.

  9. An opinion poll My pupils have hold an opinion poll among their peers to find out what they are going to be when they finish school or university. They’ve asked 40 children at random. Most of them want to be a businessman (36%). They explain their choice, saying that it is a very prestigious job. The second place takes a career of a lawyer(21%). Children say that it is a very well-paid kind of job. The third place in their list takes a job of a designer(14%). The children who have chosen these jobs characterize them as creative, skillful and often rewarding.

  10. Pupil’s compositions I believe that every man is the maker of his own fortune. The future is made of the same stuff as the present. As the famous British writer John Galsworthy said that if we didn’t think about future we couldn’t have one. When you decide your future career you must be realistic about your interests and abilities. As for me, my hopes are connected with finishing school, finding interesting, high paid work and making a career. Also I want to create a family. And I want Russia's future to be stable. I do not want there to be defaults and inflation in Russia. Also, I want our life to be calm. And my main dream is that in the whole world there will not be act of terror. It’s very hard to struggle with terrorism, because it requires world- wide efforts. So, I continue to worry about my future, my parents’ future, and, of course, Russia's future. Many roads open before us after school, but it is not easy to make the right choice. Of course, it is very important to choose a profession the suits your own interests and preferences. As for me, I want to be a businesswoman. And now I’m trying to explain “why”. The motto of my life is: “Climb every mountain until your dreams come true…” First of all it is a very interesting job, which allows you to realize your abilities and skills, your full potential. I understand that in order to succeed in business I need to be confident, active and ambitious; that I should learn and learn and learn, work and work and work. I hope that thanks to my abilities and efforts I shall get a good place in society. But to be a real professional it’s not enough to have only school knowledge. That’s why I try to raise my educational level and absorb useful information from different sources. Every day at school I hear something like: “If you want to have a good career, you have to study well and a lot, and only then you’ll reach success”. All pupils understand this differently and everybody has his/her own opinion about “making a career”. So, what is a career in general? Can you imagine, even the ancient Romans had this word and thought about it, but for them the term carriera was “running”, “life road”. And, really, now for many people who want to build their future career, a job is the most important thing, the aim of their life, their “life road”. Nowadays a career first of all is a wealthy life. It is like a “key”; with money every “door” is easy-opened. A career gives us power, respect and status in our community. It makes a person different from others, from the crowd. But for many people wealth isn’t the only thing they work hard for. The intense desire for creativity, the desire for something new- these are things which move those people. Career is the key from person to society! Where to work? Which of us hasn’t asked himself this question? And which of us has found an appropriate place or has already chosen a job? It’s not easy, is it? Some people think that when you are a teenager, it’s too early to think about such things. Of course they are right in some ways? But I don’t agree with them completely. As to choosing a job, it’s the right age to get information. Teenagers have more free time than students for example. They have the opportunity to prepare themselves for any activity. If a pupil is keen on computering, he may decide to connect his life with this science. In his spare time he can read a lot of specific literature, work in the Internet, and simply send a lot of time learning how to work with a computer. It’s also possible for him to visit different sorts of computer classes, etc. This is the first step in defining what will be of his future job. The second step is consulting with friends or relatives working in this area. It’s always useful to get advice from an older and more experienced person. So if our teenager decides to connect his life with it, what about a future job for him? Naturally, it’s early to talk about a full-time job, but instead you can try a part-time job. A lot of organizations need assistants in the summer. There you can be offered work to design sites, to look for information in the Internet, etc. Anyway, you have a chance to try to work! When trying a job you find out what you want and the in the inclinations you have. So, the main thing for teenagers is to choose the area of activity. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. If you are offered to work as a promoter – try! It’s not the best job, but it isn’t the worst either. It gives you an opportunity to associate with people, to know their demands and tastes. This job can give you a basic knowledge of advertising. Well, who knows, maybe after a while it can give you an idea to train yourself in PR-activity, for example. There is only one unchanging thing: every experience is useful. As for me, I formulised some rules for a beginning worker. Here they are: Do not expect too much from your first job. Every mistake is more useful than success. Do not depend on anybody expect yourself. Never let a job harm your health. Be proud of the job you have. Write down your job advantages and disadvantages. Analyse them. Improve yourself constantly. Try yourself out in various areas. Do not wait for help – ask for it, or correct the situation yourself. So, a career is money- a wonderful, wealthy life. But is everything so sunny? A career has many disadvantages, the same as advantages. Careerists belong to their job and not to themselves. They have absolutely no time for their family, friends, hobbies, and even often for their own health, or things that they like to do in their spare time (and they don’t have free time). A careerist forgets about the people who surround him/her. It is very difficult for people to live near such a person, as all their thoughts are about work, new plans, etc. Nevertheless a careerist isn’t a lonely person, because to realize their plans they need to look around, to communicate with different people and to find with them a common language, as life in a professional society is the basis for their future career. But in any case, this life is limited by the job. Everybody has the right to choose own future what he/she wants to do in their life. I think these dreams are partly realizable. I’m going to fulfill my ambitions this way: firstly, I should find work. I’ll try to show myself in the best way; I’ll try to conquer authority, and also I’ll read specialized literature, raising my qualifications. But I disagree that we should "live for today" and not worry about tomorrow. Because if we "live for today", the future may not be. If we “live for today”, nobody will have any dreams. And without dreams mankind does not live, he just exists. Every person must have an aim, and he must strive for it. Secondly, business is money. And probably everyone dreams to make a fortune in order to have everything he or she wants and to be a prosperous person, to earn plenty of money. But in spite of all its advantages my future profession has its disadvantages. One is that businessmen never seem to stop working. This means that there is not much time for the good things in life, such as hours spent with your family. Besides, many people say that business is not a woman’s profession, because business is a hard and dangerous job. But it’s exciting. And I’m not afraid to face the difficulties on my way. In short I’d like to say that my motto is only to be myself. And I’m sure everything is possible if I have faith.

  11. Creative materials We can put pupils in situations where they discover for themselves how effective or ineffective they are. Pupils learn most effective when they are actively involved in the learning process, not passively observing. I believe that 90 per cent of pupils are creative. Many of them with great pleasure involve the presentation preparation.

  12. The first steps • Producing a business plan.(Why is it necessary? What to include in it? What should it be like?) • Looking for funding.(Where to go to find funding?) • Advertising your business.(How?) • Creating a web page to describe your company.(Why is it useful?)

  13. Questions • Do you know any people of your age who have their own business? • Would you like to start your own business? Why? Why not? • What kind of business could you start in the place where you live?

  22. RUSSIAN ELECTRONICS The name of our business enterprise is “Russian Electronics”. We believe it will be our business, but we are going to find partners in different branches of industry and science. Our company’s staff is not big at present: 8-10 people. But if it flourishes, we’ll recruit more workers. As it’s our business, I am at the head of it. My friends Dima and Ivan are managers, and Kate is responsible for the accounts department. Also we employ some engineers and workers. Now we would like to present our product. On the basis of the latest improvement and the newest technology we have designed our Robotalk. Robot, computer-controlled machine that is programmed to move, manipulate objects, and accomplish work while interacting with its environment. Robots are able to perform repetitive tasks more quickly, cheaply, and accurately than humans. The term “robot” originates from the Czech word “robota”, meaning “compulsory labor.” It was first used in the 1921 play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots) by the Czech novelist and playwright Karel Capek. The word “robot” has been used since to refer to a machine that performs work to assist people or work that humans find difficult or undesirable. Our product offers potential customers a set of new qualities. To be more specific, Robotalk is equipped with a new generation brain. It says more than 200 words, moves in all directions, opens and closes its eyes, claps its hands, chuckles, when a secret tickle spot is touched. Robotalk is equipped with a thermometer and a timer, so it can tell the time and temperature. It’s an attractive doll. It operates from batteries.

  23. More and more people prefer to use robots in their business and their daily life Robotalk We hope our business will be a success and will bring us much profit
