What are bars? • Its medical term is called benzodiazepine or “xanax” • Bars have a similar effect to getting intoxicated • Xanax bars can be commonly found at home as it is an over-prescribed drug making it easier to be used by teenagers • Small portions of Xanax is not illegal but it is abused in higher dosages by drug addicts(which is illegal)

  3. History of Bars • Bars got its name when teenagers started calling it bars or “zanies” in school • It was developed by upjohn laboratories in Kalamazoo, Michigan in the early 1700s • They developed it because they thought it was “ better and less toxic” than other depressants at time

  4. Facts about bars • The name “XANAX” is used all over the world except in Latin America where it is referred as “TAFIL” • A swedish company made a XR form of Xanax that is only used once per day

Effects of bars • Similar to intoxication • Black out as well as impaired vision • Highly addictive and withdrawal from the drug can lead to death • Eyes close and heads get lose (psychomotor retardation) • Effect wears off quickly but can lead to people taking one after another (overdose)which could be deadly

  6. What is ecstasy? • An illegal drug that acts both as a stimulant and a hallucinogen • A dosage of ecstasy usually lasts about 3-6 hrs • Known as MDMA short for methylenedioxymethamphetamine • It is mostly used among teenagers in house parties or drug gatherings

  7. History of ecstasy • originally developed by Merck pharmaceutical company in 1912 • 1970s in the United States some psychiatrists began using MDMA as a psychotherapeutic tool • 1985, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency banned the drug

  8. Facts about ecstasy • Used in 1953 by the US Army in psychological warfare tests • Since its discovery it was mainly known as MDMA • Its nicknames include California Sunrise, X, Love drug, and Scooby Snacks

  9. Effects of ecstasy • It effects the brain altering the activity of chemical messengers, making nerve cells to communicate with one another • Increases the heart rate and blood pressure as well as not allowing the body to control temperature • Muscle tension, teeth clenching, nausea, blurred vision, faintness
