  1. John 6:1-14 “1 After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which isthe Sea of Tiberias. 2 And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. 3 Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. 5 Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, "Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may

  2. eat?" 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. 7 Philip answered him, "Two hundred denariiwould not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little." 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, 9 "There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?" 10 Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given

  3. thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, "Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost." 13 So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten. 14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, "This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!"

  10. As I researched the story we read this morning - I was kind of surprised by one statistic: • the feeding of the 5000… • the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead…

  11. WHAT TOOK PLACEin our story. Matthew, 14:14 “14 When He went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.”

  12. Matthew 15:32 “32 I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.”

  13. John 6:5 “6 Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?”

  14. Maybe Philip was a numbers man. According to his calculator there wasn’t enough money to buy food (400 denarii – more than a year’s wages)

  15. Maybe Philip was a numbers man. According to his calculator there wasn’t enough money to buy food (400 denarii – more than a year’s wages) While Phillip is doing the math, Andrew was out hunting down a solution. Andrew’s contribution was fairly pathetic (a child’s lunch of 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish).

  16. I noticed something: • Jesus DIDN’T LAUGH or make fun of either of these disciples…

  17. I noticed something: • Jesus DIDN’T LAUGH or make fun of either of these disciples… • these were PRACTICAL MENwho came up with “practical” solutions…

  18. I noticed something: • Jesus DIDN’T LAUGH or make fun of either of these disciples… • these were PRACTICAL MENwho came up with “practical” solutions… • they lived in SMALL WORLDS hemmed in by their limited imaginations…

  19. That’s PRECISLEY WHYJesus asks Philip:

  20. That’s PRECISLEY WHYJesus asks Philip: John 6:5 “6 Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?”

  24. Jesus has the disciples seat the multitude in groups of 50s. He praysto His Father. They start handing out the food to the crowd… Then when everyone is full… He has the disciples pick up the leftovers…

  25. 1st, this was a test. John 6:6 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knewwhat he would do.”

  26. NOTICE: Jesus asks, WHERE ARE WE going to get the food? and Philip DOESN’T answer the question.

  27. NOTICE: Jesus asks, WHERE ARE WE going to get the food? and Philip DOESN’T answer the question. ……HOW MUCHthe food would cost.

  28. Now what is the RIGHT ANSWERto Jesus’ question?

  29. Now what is the RIGHT ANSWER to Jesus’ question? JESUS!

  30. The way he treated Philip is good news for all of us…

  31. The way he treated Philip is good news for all of us… God uses all kinds of “tests” to shape our faith… to put a fire under us and make us grow.

  32. That’s the 1st part of this SIGN of the feeding of the 5000.

  33. Matthew 16:5-11 “5 When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. 6 Jesus said to them, "Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees." 7 And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, "We brought no bread." 8 But Jesus, aware of this, said, "O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? 9 Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five

  34. thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 10 Orthe seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 11 How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

  35. Jesus expected the disciples to connect the dots…
