  3. The map to selecting courses… • A Middle School Course Guide provides you with information about Humble ISD’s policies and procedures. It also describes the different courses offered at the middle school level. • The course guide will be available on the RMS and district website.

  4. 8th Grade Course Requirements • RELA • Math • Science • US History • One semester of physical education is recommended • State law requires middle school students complete 4 semesters of PE

  5. 8th Grade Math • 8th grade on level = Pre Algebra • 8th grade PreAP = Algebra 1 PreAP - (for High School Credit) one credit after they complete the class. • Algebra 1 is a 9th grade class, if a student completes this class in 8th grade, when they get to 9th grade they will take Geometry.

  6. On the FRONT Number your elective choices 1 -8 (1 is top choice) Course cards go out February 4 Course cards due to 4th period teacher on February 11th Elective offerings are subject to staffing and student interest Student Registration Card

Placement • Placement has been completed by teachers based upon their recommendations for continued student success When the selection card comes home on February 4th… • If you wish to make a change from Honors or Pre-AP to On-Level, please make the change on the card and sign • If you wish to make a change from On-Level to Honors or Pre-AP, please contact the teacher to discuss the change you would like to see.

  11. Getting a Head Start… • Several electives are offered to 8th graders that earn high school credit. • In high school, you must earn 26 credits to graduate. Credits are earned by successfully completing the course. Remember Your Pathways!

  14. Prerequisites… • There are several courses that have prerequisites. • Watch for these as you select courses for next year!

  16. Spanish I • Upon completion, students earn high school credit. • Students are required to have 2 credits of the same foreign language in order to graduate. • Prerequisites: Intro to Spanish is HIGHLY recommended*

  17. French 1 • Upon Completion, students will earn High School Credit. • Students are required to have 2 years of the same foreign language to graduate.

  18. Physical Education • One semester of physical education is recommended • State law requires middle school students complete 4 semesters of PE • P.E. uniforms - $20.00 • Students are given a P.E. locker to store their uniform, shoes, deodorant, & towel • P.E. – variety of activities during the year Soccer Bowling Shuffleboard Softball Volleyball Fitness training Flickerball Floor hockey Table tennis Kickball Basketball Football

Let’s talk about Athletics • Athletics lasts the entire school year • You are required to dress out in an RMS athletic uniform & appropriate shoes EVERY day • Athletics is for those who wish to compete and work hard EVERYDAY. We consider athletics an “accelerated-accelerated “ PE class. The expectations and activity are intense. • If you do not make a team, you will be in off season • 8th grade athletics begins 7th period and continues until 5p.m.

Boys Athletics • Football - 1st Semester (athletics all year) • There are no tryouts for Football & Track • Basketball – (can go into in November) • You can be in PE and try out for Basketball – you will need to move into Athletics if you make the team – this may mean a pretty big schedule change. • Track - 2nd semester (Spring) * If you are in Athletics and do not make a team, you will stay in Athletics in off- season, which involves lots of conditioning and running.

  21. Girls Athletics Volleyball –Tryouts are at the beginning of school. Basketball – Tryouts are after Volleyball Season is over Track - Off –season workouts until Track Season begins after Basketball is over Girls who do not make the volleyball or basketball team will participate in Off-Season Track.

Selecting Athletics or PE on the course card • Check ONE: • ____ Boys’ Athletics all year (football) • ____ Boys’ Athletics spring only (track) • ____ Boys’ Physical Education (one semester) • ____ Girls’ Athletics all year Coach’s Signature ______ • ____ Girls’ Physical Education (one semester) + Girls who do not make the volleyball or basketball team will participate in off season track.

  23. Off Campus PE • Requires at least 5 hours of training, Monday-Friday • Students will select an additional elective in place of their school PE class. • There is an application process in place, ending with approval at the district level. • Processing requests for Off Campus PE for the upcoming school year is recommended prior to May 13. • If your student has already met their 4 semesters of P.E. they do not need OCPE

  24. Cheerleading • Mandatory Parent Meeting Feb. 18 at 5:00pm in the library. Parents MUST attend. • Mandatory practice March 3rd- 5th from 4:00-6:00pm. • An optional Mock Tryout is March 6, 2014. from 4:00-6:00pm • Tryouts are March 7, 2014 • If you make the cheerleading squad, you will be required to take one semester of Cheer Training which counts as one semester of PE.

Verification Sheets • Verification Sheets will be sent home at the end of March with report cards and again with the end of year report card. • The verification sheet is not the same as a SCHEDULE. • The verification sheet is just VERIFYING what you are REQUESTING to have in your schedule. • There may be a conflict with another class that you want or the class may be full. This means that one of the backup choices on your green card would be substituted for one of the electives listed on your Verification Sheet. That is why it is SO important to list alternatives.

  29. And a message from our friendly school nurse… • Any student whose immunization is due during the summer OR the first semester of the new school year MUST update the immunization record prior to picking up the back-to-school packet in Aug.

  30. Student Packet Pick-up • August 5th – 8th • You may allow someone else to pick up and sign for your student’s packet • Immunization record must be current with the school nurse prior to picking up the packet

  31. Camp Longhorn • August 14th from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. • What do I bring to Camp Longhorn? • Back-To-School Packet • Completed Longhorn Information Card (from the packet) • Updated immunization record if not yet completed • $$ for School Spirit and Supply items • $$ for Lunch Account • Optional Forms from the Back To School packet
