  4. The Story of Stuff • Ever wonder where all of our stuff comes from? And why we waste so much? • The Story of Stuff: • http://storyofstuff.org/

  5. What is Waste? • Unwanted or undesired material or substance. • It may consist of the unwanted materials left over from a manufacturing process or from community and household activities. • It is also used to describe something we use inefficiently or inappropriately.

  6. Rethinking before Recycling… • Which of these do you think is the better choice for the environment? • OR

  7. The aluminum can is a better environmental choice because it can be recycled! • Although the juice box is 70 % paper, it also contains an aluminum liner and a plastic liner and cover. • Plastic and aluminum are recycled using different processes, making the juice box difficult to recycle.

  8. Reduce Reuse Recycle! • Reducing the amount of waste you produce is the best way to help the environment. • There are lots of ways to do this. For example: • Buy products without a lot of packaging • Turn off lights • Turn off water • Take public transportation/car pool

  9. Reuse • Instead of throwing things away, try to find ways to use them again! • For example: • Use cloth bags at the store • Donate old or used clothing • Plastic containers that can be used more than once

  10. Recycle • Many of the things we use every day, like paper bags, soda cans, and milk cartons, are made out of materials that can be recycled. • Recycled items are put through a process that makes it possible to create new products out of the materials from the old ones.

  11. Replace • Adopt eco-friendly goods or lifestyles, such as using handkerchiefs instead of tissues, travel by public transport instead of private cars. • Use durable items instead of one-off disposable items (ex: replace paper cups with mugs/glasses) • Choose environmentally friendly alternatives if available, such as biodegradable cleaners and garbage bags, also use less toxic chemicals

  12. Biodegradable Products • Products made from things that were once living are broken down easily by decomposers.

  13. So…what do we do with all of this? • The Story of Solutions! • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpkRvc-sOKk

  14. We Love Our Earth Craftivity • Colour your Earth. • On each cut out heart write one action that you as an individual can do to help our Earth. • Attach the hearts by string to the Earth. • You must have a minimum of 5 hearts.
