  1. Isaiah 52:13-53:8 The Suffering Servant

  2. Acts 8:30-35 • Isaiah was written more than 700 years prior to the birth of Christ. • How can his writings be used to teach about Christ? • Through the gospel, it is easy for us to see.

  3. Exalted, extolled and marred? • Isaiah 52:13 Behold, My Servant shall deal prudently;       He shall be exalted and extolled and be very high. (Cf. Psalm 2, 110, etc.) • Isaiah 52:14 Just as many were astonished at you,       So His visage was marred more than any man,       And His form more than the sons of men;

  4. Exalted, extolled and marred? • If Isaiah intends to comfort with predictions of a great and powerful Messiah, why would he be marred? • If he’s trying to frighten them into obedience, why do it with promises of a wise and glorious leader? • Confusing? Not when viewed through the lens of the gospel. • Philippians 2:5-11

  5. The mouths of kings shut by the Man of low esteem. • Isaiah 52:15-53:3 So shall He sprinklemany nations.       Kings shall shut their mouths at Him;       For what had not been told them they shall see,       And what they had not heard they shall consider. 1 Who has believed our report?      And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? 2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,       And as a root out of dry ground.       He has no form or comeliness;       And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. 3 He is despised and rejected by men,       A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.       And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;       He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

  6. The mouths of kings shut by the Man of low esteem. • Despised by the religious leaders of the day, Mark 12:13, 18, 28 • Despised by His people, Matthew 27:15-23 • Despised by the Romans, Matthew 27:27-31

  7. The mouths of kings shut by the Man of low esteem. • Yet He shut the mouths of kings. • The Roman Empire • Lasted about 1500 years, 44 BC to 1453 AD. • THE world power • Actively sought to stamp out Christianity until 313 AD, when the Edict of Milan made tolerance the official policy. The Kingdom of Christ still stands!

  8. By His stripes we are healed. • Isaiah 53:4-6 Surely He has borne our griefs      And carried our sorrows;       Yet we esteemed Him stricken,       Smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities;       The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,       And by His stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray;       We have turned, every one, to his own way;       And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

  9. By His stripes we are healed. • Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, • Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. • Hebrews 9:27-28 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, 28 so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.

  10. Smitten by God. • Isaiah 53:4-6 Surely He has borne our griefs      And carried our sorrows;       Yet we esteemed Him stricken,       Smitten by God, and afflicted. • Matthew 27:39-43

  11. As a lamb to the slaughter. • Isaiah 53:7-8 He was oppressed and He was afflicted,       Yet He opened not His mouth;       He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,       And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,       So He opened not His mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment,       And who will declare His generation?       For He was cut off from the land of the living;       For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.

  12. As a lamb to the slaughter. Jesus’ death: • An expression of God’s love, John 3:16 • Brought men and women of all nations into one body, Ephesians 2:14-18 • The way for God to be just, Romans 3:21-26 • The fulfillment of God’s plan of redemption and victory over Satan, 1 Peter 1:17-19; Hebrews 2:14 • Genesis 3:15

  13. As a lamb to the slaughter. • Jesus accepted His undeserved punishment without protest. • Mark 14:53-61, Luke 23:6-12 • Matthew 26:47-54 • John 18:36

  14. Conclusion: • In point after point, Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled in Christ. • It is powerful evidence of the inspiration of the Scriptures.

  15. Obey the gospel today! • Believe – John 8:24 • Repent – Luke 13:3 • Confess – Matthew 10:32-33 • Be Baptized – Mark 16:16 • Be Faithful – Revelation 2:10
