Hello Everybody. Welcome. Bandon Grammar School. It is one of the oldest secondary schools in Ireland. It was established in 1641. It is a co-educational boarding school with in excess of 500 pupils. Bandon Grammar School. It has been associated with European Studies since 1989.

  2. Bandon Grammar School • It is one of the oldest secondary schools in Ireland. It was established in 1641. • It is a co-educational boarding school with in excess of 500 pupils.

  3. Bandon Grammar School • It has been associated with European Studies since 1989. • A selection of our Fifth and Sixth year pupils who studied the European Studies course during the school year would come to Leuven each summer in those early years.

  6. Civic, Social and Political Education • Civic, Social and Political Education aims to prepare students for active participatory citizenship. • It helps the students to understand the rights and responsibilities of the individual in society, and the workings and nature of democracy.

Civic, Social and Political Education • The course is assessed by means of: • a written terminal examination in the Junior Certificate (40%) • submission of a Report on an Action completed(60%) • The course has seven concepts: • Human Dignity • Rights and Responsibilities • Stewardship • Development • Democracy • Law • Interdependence

CSPE - Interdependence • Pupils should be aware of the interrelatedness of all human life at the individual, community, national and global levels. • The actions of an individual can have effects sometimes in places and situations they have never seen. • Absence of an understanding of interdependence leads to an isolated, powerless and self-interested view of events.

  9. CSPE - Interdependence • The European Union is a main part of this concept. Areas covered are: • The European Parliament • The European Commission • The Council of Ministers • The History of Europe • The effects Europe has on Ireland and vice versa

  14. Lesson 1: What does it mean to be Irish? Students will explore and develop what being Irish means to them • Lesson 2: Characteristics of EU Member States A jigsaw activity enabling pupils to develop a broad knowledge base of the diverse culture of the countries of the EU • Lesson 3: Documents needed for travelling within the EU Applying for Passports & Health Insurance cards • Lesson 4: History of the European Union A card exercise on significant dates in the emergency of Europe • Lesson 5: The Euro A story on the travels of a 2-Euro coin

Lesson 6: Making Decisions in the EU A role-play exercise on the institutions of the EU • Lesson 7: The Public Relations Company Students are required to publicise the institutions of the EU • Lesson 8: Local, National & European Issues A picture card exercise to identify & discuss some issues of European concern and how they affect at local & national levels • Lesson 9: Accessing Europe How to make contact with European Institutions and bring forward an issue • Lesson 10: What does it mean to be European? Similar to lesson 1, aiming to develop a sense of European identity
